Gay Men Kissing Ousted From Chico’s Tacos in Texas

The Chico’s Tacos restaurant chain in Texas doesn’t like eating their fast- and the police agree reasoning, that a business can refuse service to anyone it wants, despite the city’s anti- ordinance.

When briefly kissed at the popular taco chain, , and ignorance of the law came out in , beginning with the ’ hurling anti- slurs at the men and ending with the Police ordering the men to leave the restaurant or a “ conduct” .

The incident has garnered and the taco chain a growing movement by rights to the restaurant, with planned at the restaurant’s multiple locations.

The hundreds of San Diegans who marched for rights in the mid- walked through a city largely indifferent, even antagonistic, to the cause.

Gays Step Up Efforts to Reverse Gay-as-Godless Stereotype

A groundbreaking about the lives of gay Americans that the Barna Group put out last week got surprisingly little attention. In my latest &; Country column for U.S. News Weekly, I tied the Barna ’s fascinating portrait of to the rights movement’s recent efforts to ratchet up and messaging. Much of the work is aimed at reversing the -as-Godless .

Here’s the top:


Though he was raised in the , Harry Knox knew he couldn’t become a minister in his because it doesn’t ordain openly . He enrolled in a of the more liberal but was eventually denied anyway. “My whole as an is an accidental ministry,” says Knox, 48, who now works at the Campaign, the nation’s largest rights group. “I would rather be a local pastor.”

Instead, since 2005, Knox has built ’s “ and program,” which works to combat the of the , , , and community as antireligious. “For far too long, organizations did not put religious at the of our efforts,” Knox says. “That’s a we’re making less often now.”

Those religious may be more plentiful than most Americans think. A out last week shows that most Americans pretty robust lives. While 72 percent of straight American describe their as “very important” in their lives, so do 60 percent of and . Almost as many, 58 percent, say they’ve made a personal and ongoing commitment to Christ.

And though they are much less likely than straights to share the beliefs of born-again —which comes as no , since most in the born-again condemn —the Barna found that 27 percent of do hold those beliefs. “Many in the Christian community assume there’s this significant between and in terms of beliefs and activities,” says , the country’s top on , who supervised the . “While there are statistically significant differences, it’s the narrow size of the that’s most surprising.”

The unleashed a torrent of hate , mostly from believers furious with Barna’s : that many are -believing . But more and more rights organizations are joining in stepping up efforts to highlight the beliefs of many Americans, largely through religious programs. And some religious and are to welcome and .

rights say that the 2004 election, when voters in 11 states passed bans that were heavily promoted through , was a wake-up call. To help counter the image of the battle as a fight between and religious Americans, , the National and , and other national rights quickly hired religious staff.

Seattle Judge: Gay city workers names don’t have to be released, for now

A King has temporarily barred the release of the of city employees involved in a city-sponsored group for and workers to an anti- rights .

Erlick ordered that some requested documents be released Monday, with the of meeting redacted. The identities of city employees who received a “public ” through the group — likely wages on other compensation — may be released following a hearing later this year.

At issue Thursday was a request made by City Light employee and self-described “ leader” Philip Irvin, who had filed a public- request for the and meeting minutes for the department’s , , , , Questioning and Club. Irvin, who says he wants to start a for formerly employees, asserts that the club has discriminated against him for his to rights.

In issuing his order, Erlick acknowledged that releasing the employees’ identities could discourage others from joining the LGBTQF group. But, he said there remains a clear public interest in knowing who is receiving state benefits, and payment for meeting or other compensation to group , Erlick said, “is a public benfit.”

Citing law, city reluctantly argues for release of gay employees’ names

Anti--rights wants of city-sponsored club

As for all sides prepare to square off in court, the City of and a self-described “ leader” seeking the release of the of and city workers involved in a city-sponsored club have lined up on the same side of the issue.

In separate , the city and the City Light employee requesting the records argue that the state public-records requires that the city release the records. City of employees associated with the department’s , , , , Questioning and Club have asked the court to order the city not to release their .

Reiterating statements made by Seattle City Attorney Tom Carr shortly after the suit was filed, for the city now assert, reluctantly, that the records requested by City Light employee Philip Irvin.

“The city sympathizes with the concerns that have expressed,” Gary T. Smith said in . “Nonetheless, the city believes that the Public Records obligates it to disclose the records at issue.”

Irvin, who claims he’s been barred from attending LGBTQF because he is and opposed to rights, has requested that the city release the of employees belonging to or attending the Public Utilities-sponsored group.

According to the city’s filing, the department sponsors eight such “affinity” for employees “with similar concerns.” Included in the array are for employees of different ages or , including European. Each group is provided with up to $1,000 annually for , and are allowed to spend two work hours a month toward .

In arguing that the records should be released, for the city assert that earlier appeals- have shown that employee information must be released even if it could result in . The city cites a 2002 case in which King County was ordered by the state to release a list of sheriff’s .

Gay activists shrug at Obama benefits move

’s first official overture to the and community, granting a of benefits to same- partners of Wednesday, did little to quiet rights who want him to push for repeal of the Defense of .

reiterated at a ceremony his “long-standing commitment” to try to overturn the law, which bars of same- marriages.

But the memorandum he signed Wednesday was a far cry from the on the 1996 law, which denies federal benefits to same- partners, or the 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban on in the military that the candidate talked about.

The memorandum aims at the fringes of anti- by the , leaving open the question of if or when the will move against the underlying federal laws.

Under the new rule, of will be eligible for long-term care , and employees may use their to take care of ailing partners or non-biological, non-adopted children.
