Ellen DeGeneres proves a gay can win over America

Which would you feel most comfortable leaving your kids with?

Ellen DeGeneres and ; ; ; and ; or Winfrey?

If you answered “,” you agreed with the 10,000 mostly who participated in a recent on AOL’s “Parent Dish.”

Thirty-one percent picked the couple, followed by Aniston (22 percent), Ray (20 percent), “” (18 percent), and Winfrey (9 percent).

The perky has captured America’s since her huge coming out at age 39 in 1997, including on her award-winning “Ellen” and the cover of Time magazine.

ago, Ellen’s move was gutsy, potentially -crushing. legend says her own earlier coming out cost her millions of dollars in from companies skittish about having a advertise their products.

But, over these dozen years, Ellen, her gifts, her personal life and her bank account have blossomed.

After hosting the Emmys and the Grammys, Ellen in 2007 became the first out person to host the .

She has done for American and Advil, teamed up with One-a-Day multivitamins to women to get checked for breast cancer and, get this, is a Cover Girl.

culture, I’m quick to admit, is my weak suit. So when I found myself shouting “No way!” at the delightful “Parent Dish” results, it was time to do a little TiVoing of Ellen’s daytime talk show: How has this wonder pulled off being so 100 percent , beloved and successful?

Three shows — and a of chuckles — later, I understand. Ellen creates an enchanting, playful land, where she, contestants and the embrace the basic goodness in themselves and others.

There are winners — and the also-winners. In one particularly funny contest, Aimee and Pennylane donned huge, padded outfits and had to answer — “How many inches are in 12 inches?” — and waddle to grab a football to win a key that might start a $40,000 Ford Taurus.

When it became clear that Aimee had found her true calling, Ellen gave the last key to Pennylane. No foul was called by Aimee.

Sympathy for the Devil: Why We Should Show Some Compassion for Ted Haggard

By

I just watched the film, “The Trials of Haggard,” produced by (which the media seem curiously intent on identifying not as a but as the daughter of Pelosi, the ). The film is a follow-up to her 2007 film “Friends of ,” in which Haggard was prominently featured just before his from revelations that he had relations with a male , with whom he also did methamphetamine. And all this happened right in the middle of the political about , in which Haggard condemned as an abomination and as a that should never be legalized.

Now, I enjoy roasting a as much as the next person, and I sat down to watch Pelosi’s film sharpening my typing fingers in preparation for slicing this evangelical to pieces, especially after just watching him on Live, in which he failed to apologize to for condemning the very “” he also presumably made. (In his is a choice–a bad choice, a sinful choice, but a choice nonetheless). But I came away feeling some compassion for Haggard, as it were. I don’t know if Pelosi intended her film to have this effect–I suspect not from her off- in the film as she follows the fallen around Phoenix selling door-to-door and bumming rooms off friends at which his family can live. But given what we know about the power of , and the fact that this man devoted his entire life and essence to being an Evangelical Christian and all that stands for–which is a when you are the of the -strong –what a striking conflict his life has been (and by all accounts still is).

By now, most of us know that is not a “choice,” any more than heterosexuality is a choice. Asking a person “When did you choose to become ?” makes about as much sense as asking a straight person “When did you choose to become straight?” The answer is the same: “Uh? I didn’t choose. I’ve always felt this way.” Right, and all the evidence from , psychology, and behavior genetics (twin studies) points to the fact that most are born straight, some are born , and some are even born , and that’s just the way it is. In a large population (and six billion of a large mammalian species certainly counts) with considerable variation in most characteristics, it is inevitable that even something as seemingly straightforward (if you’ll pardon the pun) as will likely show variations on that central theme.
