Gays Step Up Efforts to Reverse Gay-as-Godless Stereotype

A groundbreaking about the lives of gay Americans that the Barna Group put out last week got surprisingly little attention. In my latest &; Country column for U.S. News Weekly, I tied the Barna ’s fascinating portrait of to the rights movement’s recent efforts to ratchet up and messaging. Much of the work is aimed at reversing the -as-Godless .

Here’s the top:


Though he was raised in the , Harry Knox knew he couldn’t become a minister in his because it doesn’t ordain openly . He enrolled in a of the more liberal but was eventually denied anyway. “My whole as an is an accidental ministry,” says Knox, 48, who now works at the Campaign, the nation’s largest rights group. “I would rather be a local pastor.”

Instead, since 2005, Knox has built ’s “ and program,” which works to combat the of the , , , and community as antireligious. “For far too long, organizations did not put religious at the of our efforts,” Knox says. “That’s a we’re making less often now.”

Those religious may be more plentiful than most Americans think. A out last week shows that most Americans pretty robust lives. While 72 percent of straight American describe their as “very important” in their lives, so do 60 percent of and . Almost as many, 58 percent, say they’ve made a personal and ongoing commitment to Christ.

And though they are much less likely than straights to share the beliefs of born-again —which comes as no , since most in the born-again condemn —the Barna found that 27 percent of do hold those beliefs. “Many in the Christian community assume there’s this significant between and in terms of beliefs and activities,” says , the country’s top on , who supervised the . “While there are statistically significant differences, it’s the narrow size of the that’s most surprising.”

The unleashed a torrent of hate , mostly from believers furious with Barna’s : that many are -believing . But more and more rights organizations are joining in stepping up efforts to highlight the beliefs of many Americans, largely through religious programs. And some religious and are to welcome and .

rights say that the 2004 election, when voters in 11 states passed bans that were heavily promoted through , was a wake-up call. To help counter the image of the battle as a fight between and religious Americans, , the National and , and other national rights quickly hired religious staff.

Obama to extend some benefits to gay partners of federal employees

Faced with growing among and supporters, the administration today announced extension of some benefits to the same- partners of , but stopped short of offering full .

Closeted politicians stir filmmaker’s ‘Outrage’

Of the many in “,” ’s sad, devastating new about closeted - OK, alleged closeted - the one that’s most disturbing is the case made against a former Southern .
As a young liberal, the used his “as his bar,” a former alleged hookup tells the . Dick goes into involving the married Idaho senator and the now openly former New Jim McGreevey, who sits down and unburdens himself for the camera (he talks about “living your ” with an abandon that suggests either lots of therapy or lots of disco). Former Arizona talks about how much happier he was after he revealed he was (we never hear from his ex-wife, although Mrs. McGreevey does speak).
” is armed with commentary and insights from openly of like and , like (of course) and , who died last month, and such Washington insiders as Hilary Rosen. The movie never allows you to forget its aim. It wants to hold these men accountable - if the is true - not for their conservatism but for their double standard. “” tries to put the officials on a couch and determine why so many are . Someone likens their alleged behavior to , where potential outcasts help persecute kids to keep the off their trail. Clinton Says His View On Gay Marriage Is “Evolving”

News’ reports: This afternoon in Toronto, and George W. shared a stage for a “conversation with presidents” at Toronto’s Convention Centre, in a ticketed event (with a hefty payday for both ex-presidents) that was open to the general public.

It was a fascinating discussion — these two 62-year- with a combined 16 years in the , talking about and past as probably no one else alive can, for the first time in a .

While mostly kept to his not to criticize his successor, he bristled at the — advanced by , among others — that distracted the nation from the .

“I don’t buy the that our attention was diverted” by , Bush said. “I think it’s false. Matter of fact, I know it’s false. I was there.”

And while Clinton mostly kept to his to “thwart” efforts to get 42 and 43 to tangle with each other, he offered an interesting insight into his thinking on rights.

On the issue of — which Clinton, like , personally opposes — Clinton said of his position: “Frankly, it’s evolving” as he sees more committed .

As David Chalian has pointed out, Clinton isn’t the only whose position on is .

Clinton also expressed optimism that the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell policy” — which he helped enact — will eventually come off the books, allowing of the armed services to serve openly.

“I think that time will to a repeal of this ban,” Clinton said.

After the , enraged African American ministers stormed the outside the and vowed that they will work to oust the who supported the bill, which was sponsored by (D-At Large). They caused such an that and D.C. police were called in to clear the .

Yesterday’s action could be a precursor to a later this year over whether to legalize same- in the city. “There is no turning back,” said , who plans to introduce a broader bill in a few months.

Barry, who said he supports rights and civil , warned after the that the District could erupt if the council does not proceed slowly on same- .

“All is going to lose,” Barry said. “We may have a civil war. The black community is just adamant against this.”

Mayor Adrian M. (D) has said he will sign the bill recognizing same- marriages performed elsewhere. The council’s action puts the matter before , which under the has 30 days to review District . PLATTSBURGH — Controversial anti- and his are planning another visit to Plattsburgh.
