Hawaii Senators Hesitate On Rescue Of Gay Civil Unions

Hawaii senators who had vowed to rescue a stranded gay civil unions bill from a deadlocked committee and pass it this legislative session have begun to backpeddle.

House Bill 444, which would grant gay and lesbian couples all the rights of marriage, was marooned on February 25 when it deadlocked on a 3-3 vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The final tally came after a grueling 18 hour marathon hearing session that ended at 3AM.

Even before the votes were in Senate leaders had begun discussing the possibility of rescuing the bill out of committee for a full vote on the Senate floor. The bill sailed through the House on a 33 to 17 vote. See Hawaii Senators Hesitate On Rescue Of Gay Civil Unions

Gay Entertainment Report: ‘Family Guy’ Goes Gay

Peter Griffin goes gay in tonight’s Family Guy episode.

The Seth McFarlane created animated sitcom has worn its rainbow pride on its shoulder before but tonight it goes all the way.

The episode, titled Family Gay, premieres on Fox tonight, Sunday, March 8 at 9PM.

A Fox press release about the episode described the premise of the show: “To help pay off his incredible debt, Peter participates in medical experiments to make some extra cash. First, he is injected with the ‘Seth Rogen’ gene that ‘gives you the appearance of being funny even though you haven’t actually done anything funny’. Then he is injected with a gene that leads him to a new mate, leaving a broken-hearted Lois behind. Although the family is crushed, they quickly realize the most important thing is that Peter is happy.”

Trial Begins For Men Accused Of Killing Gay Man In Florida

On dirt road that leads to Wahneta, Florida a driver made the ghastly discovery of a bloody body stabbed to death sitting on the side of the road. The date was Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at about 1:20AM.

That dead man was Ryan Keith Skipper, 25, a gay man. The trials of his accused murders – William David Brown Jr., 22, and Joseph Bearden, 23 – begin today, after several delays, as lawyers begin selecting a jury in a Polk County courtroom, reports The Ledger.

The pair were arrested soon after Skipper’s body was found and have remained in custody over the past two years.

Details of what happened between the three men remain sketchy. Family and friends hope the trial will shed light on Skipper’s final hours.

London to market to gay travellers

London could literally soon be front and centre on the gay and lesbian tourism map.

Tourism London met last week with politicians, gay activists and the owner of Fun Maps, a New Jersey-based gay publication that reaches more than 3.5 million readers.

London will be part of a new edition of Fun Maps’ Toronto and Niagara Region map when it comes out in July, said Peter Richer, president of the London Gay Community Centre.

“It’s a gay magazine, but we want to recognize the diversity in London. Anything that’s a gay-friendly business in London could go in,” Richer said.

The Toronto Fun Map — like a travel guide — will feature 12 to 18 pages added with London listings, Richer said.

Sweden To Become Seventh Country To Legalize Gay Marriage

A gay marriage bill introduced Wednesday in Sweden’s parliament enjoys broad support and is likely to pass, making Sweden the seventh country to grant gays and lesbians the right to marry.

The legislation aims to repeal a 1987 law defining marriage as a heterosexual union. A recent poll found that nearly three-fourths of Swedes (71%) approve of gay marriage.

Lawmakers in Sweden approved civil unions for gay couples in 1995. The law offers gay and lesbians the same legal status as married heterosexual couples, including the right to adopt.

Store changes display, but defends gay magazine as ‘free expression’

VANCOUVER and TORONTO — Clothing retailer American Apparel, facing questions over the placement of a magazine deemed pornographic in a West Vancouver store, is citing a “free-expression” argument to defend its policies on selling BUTT, a gay-lifestyle quarterly.

The controversy began this week when a West Vancouver woman, taking her 13-year-old daughter shopping at the store, came across a display that featured an accessible copy of BUTT that contained, as she put it, “a full, double-page spread of two men engaged fully in a sex act.”

She complained to the store manager and the operators of the mall.

In its first comment on the controversy that has led West Vancouver’s bylaw office to fine the store in the city’s Park Royal mall, spokesman Ryan Holiday said the company supports its gay customers “and anyone who enjoys the magazine.”

Activists Call On Obama To Repeal Federal Gay Marriage Ban

Grassroots gay activists protesting the passage of California’s gay marriage ban on November 4 turned their attention Saturday to the federal-level ban.

The federal Defense of Marriage Act, widely known by its acronym DOMA, is the 12-year-old law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman for federal agencies and allows states to ignore legal gay marriages performed in another state.
