Man charged with hate crime in assault on two gay men

A Central Islip man used anti-gay epithets while beating and kicking two men early Friday morning, then told police he would do it again, Suffolk authorities said.

Wenzola Rountree, 31, was charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment after he approached three openly gay men walking out of a friend’s home on Earle Street in Central Islip at 1:15 a.m. Friday, said Det. Sgt. Robert Reecks of the Hate Crimes Unit.

Alameda school board adopts plan to halt anti-gay bullying

School district leaders have approved lesson plans for kindergartners through fifth graders that aim to curb anti-gay bullying.

Trustees voted 3-2 on Tuesday to adopt the Safe Schools curriculum, which supporters say will help children of gay parents feel welcome at school and help end anti-gay teasing and bullying on the playground.

The lessons also aim to provide a safe environment for children to learn, as well as to offer a framework for teachers to break down stereotypes and teach kids about different types of families.

“The need for this is real,” said Beth Kromer, a fourth-grade teacher at Ruby Bridges Elementary School.

Brian Harris, a 16-year-old student at the Alameda Community Learning Center, told trustees that he has been called anti-gay epithets on campus.

“I have been harassed by other students in the classroom and I have even begun to consider just stopping and giving up on life,” Harris said.

Opponents of the curriculum said it would undercut parents’ rights to teach their children about relationships and sexual orientation, and that it pushed a political agenda without addressing ways to help other groups who may be singled out at school.

Trustee Trish Spencer, who voted no, said she was concerned that lessons about other vulnerable students were not on the table.

Testimony wraps up in Oak Lawn anti-gay beating trial

A Dallas man attacked in what prosecutors say was an antigay beating testified Tuesday that he was knocked unconscious and remembers very little of what happened. Jonathan Gunter of Garland is accused of aggravated robbery in connection with the attack, and another man is awaiting trial. Gunter, 32, and the other man, Bobby Singleton – also from Garland – accosted Jimmy Lee Dean and uttered gay epithets on a street in Oak Lawn in July 2008, according to testimony. More.

AAG Coakley slaps civil rights injunction on homophobic neighbor from hell

Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office obtained a civil rights injunction Jan. 6 against a Norwood woman for repeated anti-gay harassment of a gay neighbor who lives in the same apartment complex.

“Bias-motivated conduct, such as the harassment and intimidation we allege in this case, are devastating to victims not only because of the immediate physical and emotional harm they cause, but because feelings of fear, anxiety and profound loss of personal security often last far longer than the incident,” said Coakley in a statement. “Beyond their impact on individual victims, hate crimes and other forms of bias-motivated activity are very detrimental to communities, and this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

In a press release announcing the injunction Coakley’s office details a persistent pattern of harassment by May. In November 2007 May allegedly began spreading rumors that her gay neighbor was a pedophile and sexual predator. Six months later May complained to her landlord after the victim hung a gay pride flag outside his window, and the landlord forced him to remove the flag. May also allegedly shouted anti-gay epithets at the victim on multiple locations within the presence of fellow tenants, and she physically confronted him in the yard of his home. Last August May allegedly made a baseless complaint to Norwood police claiming that the victim had exposed himself to her.

Coakley’s office alleged that as a result of the harassment the victim has feared for his safety and has been forced to alter his routine to avoid having contact with May.
