CHICAGO GAY HISTORY: Mapping queer Chicago
by John D’Emilio
I’m something of a technophobe, but with this growing list of places, I found myself excitedly imagining a Web-based map of queer Chicago, with every address marked and coded. A viewer would be able to see the parts of the city that were thick with LGBT locations, and each would be categorized to distinguish different types of places—social, cultural, political, commercial. As one moved decade by decade through time, the map would change, providing a dynamic visual image of shifting, growing, changing neighborhoods and city spaces.

Out official is Chicago mayor’s pick to helm public schools
Ron Huberman, an openly gay ally of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley who recently was appointed CEO of the city’s public schools, is profiled. Being gay “has given me a great sensitivity for the need to be inclusive,” Huberman said. “If I didn’t grow up being part of a group that was viewed differently, I may not have that sensitivity. It makes me in tune to individuals, groups and others who are not fitting in and may need extra support.” Chicago Sun-Times

Gay Chicago celebrates history as Obama becomes the 44th President
“We must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America,’ Obama told the enthusiastic crowd. ”America is ready to lead once more.”
An estimated 2 million people, the largest inauguration audience, crowded the National Mall to witness Obama’s swearing in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, using the same Bible that Lincoln used at his own swearing in on March 4, 1861.
“The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.”
