Thursday’s Watercooler: Cynthia Nixon is dating a man with boobs and Laura Bush comes out for gays

The fact that a star of Sex and the City is a lesbian is really quite amazing. The fact that she is finally opening up about her home life is truly a monumental moment. So, today, we should all take a moment and read the Advocate article where Cynthia Nixon describes her girlfriend [1] as a little man with boobs. At the same time, she makes it clear that she is gay and she loves her partner’s sexuality.

[2]

Onward with the gay news. Elena Kagan’s sexuality is becoming a central focus of the Supreme Court [3]process. Andrew Sullivan went so far as to call for Kagan’s sexuality to become a topic in the nomination hearing. It’s incredible and a serious turn for the worse if a candidate’s sexual preference can become an issue with respect to their job performance.

While we might all be depressed about the Kagan press, there is good news on the horizon. Mad Men star Bryan Brett [5] is the newest in a long line of celebrities who have come out in favor of gay actors after a Newsweek article slammed their ability to act in straight roles. Check out the video below.

And let’s not stop there! Laura Bush – the woman who actually voluntarily joined the Bush family – has come out in favor of gay marriage [6]. Sure, the woman has A LOT to atone for, supporting the Bush years, but we’ll take the support where we can get it. Not to mention the fact that she supports access to abortions as well. I’m starting to wonder if Mrs. Bush has had some sort of head injury recently.

Finally, in weird news for the day, an Australian reality show is auctioning off virgins [8]. I don’t really know what else to say about this except that it’s disgusting and unbelievable. I never really liked the time I spent in Australia, but this is taking things a little too far.

Gay rights group demands apology from Newsweek

(Los Angeles) A gay rights group is demanding an apology from Newsweek magazine for a recent story that the group says suggested gay actors can’t play straight characters.

“An actor’s personal life should not be a factor in their believability in a role,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. “That would be tantamount to audiences not buying Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl as lovers in their upcoming film ‘Killers’ because the two are happily married to different people in real life.”

GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro said the magazine has not offered the apology sought by the group, but that the topic was discussed with Barrios and Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Milk,” during a Q&A with Newsweek on Wednesday. He said he believed that discussion would be published in the next issue.

Some Hollywood stars blasted the magazine and writer Ramin Setoodeh for an April 26 story that said it was OK for straight actors to play gay roles, but “it’s rare for someone to pull off the trick in reverse.”

In the story, Setoodeh criticized Sean Hayes’ latest leading-man performance on Broadway, writing that the openly gay actor “comes off as wooden and insincere, like he’s trying to hide something, which of course he is.”

Ryan Murphy, creator of the hit Fox series “Glee,” called for a boycott of the magazine until it apologizes to its gay readers, Hayes and “and other brave out actors who were cruelly singled out in this damaging, needlessly cruel and mind-blowingly bigoted piece.”

Kristin Chenoweth, who stars opposite Hayes in “Promises, Promises” on Broadway, defended her co-star and denounced the Newsweek article in a letter to the editor.

“No one needs to see a bigoted, factually inaccurate article that tells people who deviate from heterosexual norms that they can’t be open about who they are and still achieve their dreams,” she wrote.

Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, however, defended the magazine and its writer in an essay published Wednesday by The Huffington Post website.

Sorkin blamed the tabloid-fueled drive to know every detail about performers’ personal lives and the institutionalized homophobia found in the American military, and national marriage and adoption laws.

Newsweek did not respond to a call and e-mail seeking comment Wednesday.

Gay director denies telling gay actors not to come out

Openly gay director Todd Holland recently explained remarks he made during a panel discussion at the California Outfest film festival. Holland has been accused of telling gay actors to stay in the closet during the panel discussion, an accusation he denies.

“[F]or the past week, my response has been twisted and shoved back into my mouth over and over — so that I appear to be a gay director telling all actors to ’stay in the closet,’” said Holland in a piece for The Wrap. “There are only a few things I allow to be shoved in my mouth — my mangled words are not one of them.”

La Weekly reported that during the Outfest panel, titled “Taking It to the Streets: LGBT Directors Get Political,” Holland “told a small audience that he advises young, gay male actors to ’stay in the closet.’” Holland, a past director on the The Larry Sanders Show, claims he was “just being realistic.”
