Anti-gay religious groups promote their intolerance of GLBT individuals and families, but a less prominent aspect of some such groups is antipathy toward certain religions, and even races and ethnicities.
Once example is the Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, Kansas. Headed by the Rev. Fred Phelps, Westboro-which is made up mostly of Phelps’ extended family-has generated headlines for picketing the funerals of gay people as well as the funerals of fallen military servicemembers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Gay row goes before Kirk’s ‘court’ as split threat talked down
A COMPLAINT against openly gay Kirk minister Scott Rennie will be heard before the Church of Scotland’s own equivalent of a civil court next week.
However, the moderator designate refused to be drawn into the controversy surrounding the appointment of Mr Rennie, 36, as he faced questions over the possibility of a split in the Kirk if it goes ahead.
During what was his first public appearance in the role, the Rev Bill Hewitt, 58, insisted his job would be to oversee a forthcoming Church debate on the issue and he would not be drawn into answering questions about the row.
However, reacting to the suggestions that supporters of controversial preacher Fred Phelps – who has protested against homosexuality in the United States – are planning to demonstrate outside the General Assembly when the issue is being discussed, he said: “People are free to demonstrate if they want. The British government banned 22 people from being allowed to enter the UK on May 5. Along with the Islamic clerics and white supremacists the Home Office barred for “spreading hate” appeared the names of two Americans: the Rev. Fred Phelps, whose Topeka, Kansas church, Westboro Baptist Church, pickets the funerals of American soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and conservative radio talk show host Michael Alan Wiener, known more widely by his professional pseudonym, Michael Savage.

Planned anti-gay demo falls flat
A threatened mass protest by an anti-gay US church failed to materialise when only one demonstrator turned up.
Fred Phelps and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper from the Westboro Baptist Church were banned from entering the UK to protest against a play in Hampshire.
They had urged a picket of Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke over the staging of The Laramie Project, a play about a man killed for being gay.
But only one protester arrived and was heckled away by counter-demonstrators.
Play supporter Blake West was among about 50 students who protested against Westboro church outside the college on Friday.

Anti-gay group headed to Plattsburgh again
PLATTSBURGH — Controversial anti-gay church leader Fred Phelps and his followers are planning another visit to Plattsburgh.
Phelps and crew are planning to picket at Plattsburgh High School and Plattsburgh State Friday, March 6, for 40 to 45 minutes at each site.
The anti-gay members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, are protesting the High School’s Gay/Straight Alliance and a performance of the play “The Laramie Project” at the college.
