A Long Road Traveled

The I got as close to the as I did this week was many years ago— after the riots, when I was a 13-year-old from St. Margaret’s School in Lowell, Mass. We spelling bee kids didn’t make it into the that day—we stood outside as spoke to us from a . By then I already knew I was . Raised in a staunch Catholic home and taught (and tormented) by , I was certain that an open (that was the only term I knew back then) could never be allowed inside the . I knew nothing of the nascent -rights movement—it ’t reached Lowell in 1975. All I knew was that that whatever words there were to describe what I was, it would have to be suppressed forever. I assumed that I would have to either become a priest or figure out some other way to hide.

Thankfully, time marched on, and I eventually became a politicized college student rather than a candidate for the —and ultimately I kicked open my closet door and came out. But I can’t help thinking about that as I the reel of yesterday’s visit to the in my head. As the of , an for senior citizens, I was invited, along with some 200 other leaders, to join the Obamas in commemorating —which falls this year on the of the Stonewall riots.

I was accompanied by three : a couple who are 86 and 91, who reminisced about voting for and described as “the most inspiring since ,” and a and founder of the Liberation Front, an group formed in the , who proudly chose his over the worn by every other man in the room.

Apart from celebrating, we had gone to the to make a point: that older have to be included in the for progress. And we did what we came to do, with one of our (the ) even receiving a personal meeting with the and Mrs. . But as I stood with my , in the front row, some five feet from the presidential podium, I realized how intensely personal this experience was for me. I thought about how each member of the has had our own life’s journey—and each of us was moved deeply and differently by that moment.

Dragging his feet on DADT: First Gay Arabic Linguist To Be Fired Under Obama

Editior’s note: Dan Choi will be on tonight!

Aarob writes:

“Dan Choi, a graduate and officer in the National Guard who is fluent in Arabic and who returned recently from , received notice today that the military is about to fire him. Why? Because he came out of the closet as a man on national .

Some readers might think it unfair to blame . After all, the inherited the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law when he took office. As Commander-in-Chief, he has to follow the law. If the law says that the military must fire any who acknowledges being , that is not ’s fault.

Or is it?

A new study, about to be published by a group of experts in , shows that does, in fact, have stroke-of-the-pen authority to suspend . The “don’t ask, don’t tell” law requires the military to fire anyone found to be or . But there is nothing requiring the military to make such a finding. The can simply order the military to stop investigating service .

An would not get rid of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, but would take the of suspending its implementation, hence rendering it effectively dead. Once see and serving openly, legally and without problems, it will be much easier to get rid of the law at a later time.

I spent a day with Dan Choi last month, and he is not someone we want to fire from the military. He loves the . He served bravely under tough in . His Arabic is excellent, and he used his to diffuse many tough situations and to save lives, both Iraqi and American. All of his unit know he is , and they have been very supportive of him. But he doesn’t want to live a lie.

They seem to believe that should on other -rights issues first, and that he shouldn’t spend his precious political capital trying to ram a through .”

Hannity criticized gay Episcopal bishop for “partisan hatred,” but called partisan Rev. Falwell a “very dear friend”

On his show, claimed that Rev. On the January 13 edition of Hannity, claimed that Rev. Gene Robinson — the openly bishop from whom - has selected to deliver the invocation at his — “bashed ” in a prayer published in GQ magazine. Hannity then stated: “You know, all along, I actually thought were supposed to spread the of God, not fan the flames of partisan hatred.” However, Hannity did not criticize his , the late Rev. — whom Hannity called a “very ”– despite Falwell’s history of inflammatory, partisan directed at .

According to the website, Robinson said he would use some of the prayers that he wrote for GQ — which do not mention by name — in drafting his prayer for the . In one prayer, titled “A Prayer for ,” reproduced on reporter Michael ’s Articles of , Robinson wrote in part:

O God, we give you thanks for your child Barack, as he assumes the office of of the .

Give him wisdom beyond his years, and inspire him with ’s reconciling leadership, ’s courageous and vision, and JFK’s ability to enlist the best efforts of our .

Give him a quiet , for our Ship of State needs a steady, calm captain for these times, not a fierce warrior who knee-jerk reacts to every real or perceived threat.

Give him stirring words, for we will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges .

But while Hannity criticized Robinson for “partisan” remarks, he frequently hosted Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority and frequent critic of and progressive positions. Falwell had a history of inflammatory statements about former Bill and -designate . For example, Falwell publicized, co-financed, and distributed The Clinton Chronicles, a video that contained anti-Clinton of drug trafficking and murder. On the October 22, 2003, episode of ’s Crossfire, Falwell said, “I think that we needed Bill Clinton, because we turned our backs on the lord and we needed a bad to get our attention again.” Falwell also called “a bad person with a criminal mind,” and said during the -up to the Democratic presidential primary, “I think Hillary would be the worst thing that would ever happen to America.” Falwell also told the Associated Press, “I don’t think anybody doubts that the have a better record and a better commitment to national security than the do.”

Despite these and other partisan remarks by Falwell, Hannity devoted an entire broadcast of Hannity &; Colmes to Falwell the day after his death, during which he referred to Falwell as “a very of mine” and said, “He may have misspoke once or twice. But he devoted his life, to his .” Before his death, Falwell was frequently a recipient of Hannity’s praise. On the January 24, 2007, broadcast, Hannity discussed Alexandra Pelosi’s about evangelical with her and said, “I hope you also capture like Franklin Graham and the Falwell. They spend millions of dollars a year to help in a of very positive ways. Did you capture that?” Pelosi responded, “Listen to you. You’re just doing P.R. for them.” Also, during a discussion of children born into poverty on the July 2, 2006, edition of Hannity &; Colmes, Hannity cited Falwell as an example of who are “charitable” and said, “ has a home for any girl who’s . He’ll send them to school. He’ll give them free care if they have their baby.” Hannity also delivered the commencement address at Falwell’s Liberty University in May 2005.

As Media Matters for America noted, Hannity applied a double standard on the January 12 broadcast of his show when he said, “I don’t like the lyrics that refer to women as ‘B’s’ and ‘ho’s,’ and we’ve had many discussions about this,” despite the fact that he previously aired concert footage of rock musician and right-wing Nugent calling a “piece of shit” and referring to as a “worthless bitch.” After airing the clip, Hannity referred to Nugent as a “friend and on the program.”
