NY Visitor from Boston victim of attack, slurs during Gay Pride weekend
A man visiting a friend on the upper East Side was robbed and pistol-whipped during Gay Pride weekend by a group of hoodlums yelling anti-gay slurs, the victim and cops said Sunday.
Joseph Holladay, 36, said he was set upon by at least three men on E. 85th St. about 4 a.m. Saturday.
“Out of nowhere, I’m being attacked,” he said from his bed at New York Presbyterian-Hospital Weill Cornell, a nasty gush visible on his forehead.
One of the robbers called out, “What are you looking at?” and used an anti-gay epithet, the Boston man added.

Man charged with hate crime in assault on two gay men
A Central Islip man used anti-gay epithets while beating and kicking two men early Friday morning, then told police he would do it again, Suffolk authorities said.
Wenzola Rountree, 31, was charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment after he approached three openly gay men walking out of a friend’s home on Earle Street in Central Islip at 1:15 a.m. Friday, said Det. Sgt. Robert Reecks of the Hate Crimes Unit.

Withers: Obama will sign directive for benefits for gay couples
Oh my. This Obama fellow is good. For the past few weeks President Barack Obama’s name has been an epithet on the lips of many gays and lesbians. From non-work on DADT to a defense of DOMA that made Rev. Pat Robertson sexually aroused, Obama’s White House has come under …

Hundreds of Rhode Islanders turned out on street corners Friday in spontaneous opposition to the anti-gay, anti-Jew message of a tiny group of demonstrators from Kansas. More than 300 students from East Providence High School crammed one corner of the city’s busiest intersection at Taunton and Pawtucket avenues as school let out. Some gripped neon signs supporting gay people. During the school day, students also wore yarmulkes to support their Jewish classmates. At another corner, 100 or so people, including high school alumni, gathered, holding signs such as “Teach Love, Not Hate” and “Our Giant Signs are Better than Yours.” One even had a pink bunny suit on with “I Love Boys” written on his belly. On a third corner, five members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., carried epithet-laden picket signs, denouncing homosexuality and declaring, “America is doomed” for tolerating gays and Jews. Various counter-protestors chanted — “Go Home” or “Gay is the Way” — and for a short time the shouts unified in obscenities. “I know a lot of gay people in my family,” freshman Jayden DeCosta said. “It’s anybody’s right to do what they want.”

Alameda school board adopts plan to halt anti-gay bullying
School district leaders have approved lesson plans for kindergartners through fifth graders that aim to curb anti-gay bullying. Trustees voted 3-2 on Tuesday to adopt the Safe Schools curriculum, which supporters say will help children of gay parents feel welcome at school and help end anti-gay teasing and bullying on the playground. The lessons also aim to provide a safe environment for children to learn, as well as to offer a framework for teachers to break down stereotypes and teach kids about different types of families. “The need for this is real,” said Beth Kromer, a fourth-grade teacher at Ruby Bridges Elementary School. Brian Harris, a 16-year-old student at the Alameda Community Learning Center, told trustees that he has been called anti-gay epithets on campus. “I have been harassed by other students in the classroom and I have even begun to consider just stopping and giving up on life,” Harris said. Opponents of the curriculum said it would undercut parents’ rights to teach their children about relationships and sexual orientation, and that it pushed a political agenda without addressing ways to help other groups who may be singled out at school. Trustee Trish Spencer, who voted no, said she was concerned that lessons about other vulnerable students were not on the table.

‘Fat Gay Jew’ - surprises with unexpected freshness
While its title sounds like an epithet, if not a racial slur, Fat Gay Jew, Charter Theater’s trio of interrelated one-act plays, contains ample laugh-out-loud moments.
Area-based actor/playwright Mario Baldessari has collected a provocative list of ugly names for those who are fat, gay or Jewish. But he’s also written three reasonably believable scenarios that highlight some of the most uncomfortable aspects of being either fat, gay or Jewish.
This compact 90-minute evening takes place at Arlington’s intimate Theatre on the Run stage Thursdays through Sundays until May 23.
Is it a play with a message? Yes, and that’s clearly stated in the prologue/preface when actor Jim Helein allows there’s lots of “touchy stuff that most good people don’t usually say.”
Director Keith Bridges uses a bare-bones set — a table and four chairs — and has mined his performers’ individual quirks. Laconic Helein has no choice but to play the fat guy, his size and girth evident. He’s the one we meet first as he moves the furniture complaining that just because he’s fat doesn’t mean he’s strong.
Baldessari plays the gay guy with exaggerated feyness and Renee Calarco, the self-described token Jew in the theater company, plays a suburban wife, a single woman whose best friends are gay men and a convert to Judaism who believes that her Jewish connections make her a better Jew.
