Church ponders next step on gay vows

Maine Senate Backs Same-Sex Marriage

could be the next state to embrace same-sex marriage after the State voted Thursday to legalize the practice.

The Democratic-controlled voted 20 to 15 for a bill that would allow to marry starting later this year. The measure appears to have even broader support in the , which will take it up on Tuesday.

Gay-marriage backers target New England

Two New England states have already legalized same- , and a -based wants to see the other four join them.

and and Defenders, known as GLAD, has launched a first-of-its-kind aimed at winning approval for same- in the six-state region by 2012.

Same- is already legal in and , a result of court in cases brought by GLAD . The 2003 decision was the first in the nation, while the ruling went into effect Nov. 12.

“We can make a - zone by strategically combining existing legal, electoral and on-the-ground know-how to fast-track in every state,” GLAD Lee Swislow said.
