Family says closeted gay sailor killed Provost
The aunt of August Provost, a bisexual Navy seaman from Houston found murdered at Camp Pendleton last month, told Dallas Voice this week that the family has received information suggesting that her nephew’s killer is a gay sailor who somehow feared being outed by Provost.
Rose Roy, of Beaumont, the sister of Provost’s father, said in a phone interview Tuesday, July 14 that she’s “not at liberty” to identify the source who provided the information to the family. But Roy said the source told the family Provost had a heated argument with the suspect a week before his murder, and that the sailor now being held as a person of interest by the Navy has a history of mental illness.
“This guy went the extra mile to make sure that my nephew would never be able to speak about his [the killer’s] sexuality,” Roy said. “My nephew died for reasons other than what the military is saying.”

Texas official admits mistakes in raid of gay bar
A raid on a Fort Worth gay bar by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission that left one man seriously injured was done in violation of several of the agency’s policies, according to TABC Administrator Alan Steen. “I don’t think you have to dig very deep to figure out that TABC has violated some of their policies,” Steen said. “We know that, and I apologize for that.” Meanwhile, the city is requesting that federal prosecutors take on additional oversight responsibilities for the investigation of what transpired at the Rainbow Lounge. Bar raid demands independent probe
Don’t expect law enforcement agencies involved in Rainbow Lounge incident to police themselves
It’s not exactly clear how the Fort Worth Police Department and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission will wiggle out of the public relations stranglehold the LGBT community now has on the two agencies, but I know from years of watching these dramas unfold that they will unless there is an independent investigation.
The local police officers and the state agents who descended on the Rainbow Lounge on Sunday morning, June 28, about 1 a.m. — arresting some patrons for public intoxication and apparently seriously injuring one — will all watch each other’s backs.
The official police reports that the law enforcement officials filed following the raid — which ironically occurred on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion and the birth of the gay rights movement in New York City in 1969 — already hold the arresting officers and agents harmless.
The officers and agents claim in the reports that they encountered belligerent drunks in the one-week-old nightclub who threatened them in a sexually suggestive manner. That’s possibly the most preposterous part of the official version of the incident.

New survey shows possible crisis among area LGBT youth
Youth First Texas recently released the results of a first-ever comprehensive survey of LGBT youth in the Dallas metropolitan area, and it suggests there may be a widespread mental health crisis among that population.
YFT officials said the study was born out of a need to determine if the nonprofit organization was meeting the needs of the youth it has pledged to serve.
Judith Dumont, director of administration at YFT, led the youth study. She said, “Any youth service provider that authentically understands their population should have a comprehensive study [of their own youth].”
She said there are national studies available, but this one is the only one available “in Dallas, in Texas and even the Southwest.”
The raw data for the study was collected from 100 LGBT and questioning youth and allies, ages 14 to 22, from October through December 2008. The subsequent statistical processing was performed by Jason Mintor, a doctoral candidate at Southern Methodist University. See New survey shows possible crisis among area LGBT youth

NC leaders remain steady avoiding marriage vote
RALEIGH, N.C. — There’s little doubt lawmakers heard the voices of thousands of Christian conservatives outside the Legislative Building seeking a statewide vote on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
There’s also little doubt the rally participants won’t get what they want.
While voters in all other Southeastern states have approved state constitutional amendments restricting marriage between one man and one woman since 2004, North Carolina has declined to follow along. A combination of partisan strategy, steady opposition from gay rights groups and a lack of court challenges to current state law has kept the issue off the ballot.
And it’s likely to stay off as long as Democrats run the Legislature. See NC leaders remain steady avoiding marriage vote

Possible ‘Idol’ finalist is mucho gay
VotefortheWorst.com, a Web site dedicated to keeping the Sanjayas of the world in competition on “American Idol” for as long as possible, has outed (if you can call it that) contender Adam Lambert with pix of him kissing another man. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. (Geez, I hope not or I’m in trub-bull)! Of course, this raises the question whether it’s a big deal anyway — it’s not like the photos are X-rated, just same-sex. Get over it, people. I have two words for you: “Clay. Aiken.” See photo @ Possible ‘Idol’ finalist is mucho gay

ENDA, end of military ban, DP benefits top Polis’ agenda
The Employment Nondiscrimination Act, lifting the military gay ban and providing domestic-partner benefits to federal employees are the chief first-term goals cited by U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo. “We should absolutely be holding our elected officials, including President Obama, to their commitments to support those three pieces of legislation — and our elected members of the House and Senate to deliver on those,” he said. Mardi Gras returns to Galveston; Winter Party heats up Miami
Last February, Galveston Island rolled out the red carpet for a Mardi Gras celebration that showed the Gulf Coast to be home to one of Texas’ most gay-friendly small towns. Barely seven months later, the city resembled Atlantis, with most of it completely submerged.
But Galveston, as it did more than a century ago, is roaring back. This week, Harbor House — a bayside boutique of 42 rooms — officially reopened for business. Its older seawall-side sister, the Hotel Galvez, opened late last year, and another property, the Tremont Hotel (which on New Year’s Eve 2007 was sold out for a same-sex wedding) is set to be back in business by May.
And the city is already gearing up for Mardi Gras, with a 12-day celebration starting Feb. 13 and ending on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 24. The main event will be on Saturday, Feb. 21, with the Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade and the 24th annual Tremont House Ball (this time held at the Hotel Galvez). Teen accused of blackmailing classmates into gay sex using Facebook
An 18-year-old suburban Milwaukee high school student is accused of blackmailing classmates into gay sex using Facebook. The suspect, Anthony Stancl, would pose as a girl on Facebook and trick the victims into sending him naked photos, then threaten to post the photos on the Internet if they didn’t have sex with him.
Stancl is charged with multiple counts of child enticement, sexual assault of a child and possession of child pornography. He faces a sentence of 300 years in prison if convicted on all charges. SeeTeen accused of blackmailing classmates into gay sex using Facebook
