Backers of Gay Marriage Rethink California Push

LOS ANGELES — Discouraged by stubborn numbers and pessimistic , major financial of same-sex marriage are cautioning rights to delay a campaign to overturn California’s ban on such until at least 2012.

Earlier this year, many supporters of same- seemed eager to mount a 2010 campaign to overturn Proposition 8, which was passed by in November and defined as “between a man and a .”

But the timing of another campaign has since been questioned by several of the movement’s big , including David Bohnett, a philanthropist and who gave more than $ to the to 8.

“In with a number of my major No on 8 ,” Mr. Bohnett said in an e- message, “I find that they share my : namely, that we will step up to the plate — with resources and talent — when the time is right.”

“The only thing worse than losing in 2008,” he added, “would be to lose again in 2010.”

The issue of when to go back to the was also the central topic at a contentious “ ” held Saturday at a church in , east of Los Angeles, where about 200 rights gathered to discuss their next step. It was the second large meeting of leaders since late May when the California ruled against a to Proposition 8, which passed with 52 percent of the .

Shortly after the court’s decision, officials at California, one of the largest rights in California, issued an online for for a possible 2010 campaign, citing a need to capitalize on over the decision and on the seeming from the recent legalization of same- in several other states.

But that thinking has apparently evolved.

Marc , director for California, said he spent June and early July asking the opinions of nearly two dozen California and and had been surprised by the almost unanimous opinion that a 2010 race was a .

“I expected having watched the and the real pain that the L.G.B.T. community had experienced that there would be some real measurable remorse in the ,” Mr. said, referring to , , and . “But if you look at the numbers since November, they really haven’t moved at all.”

A major factor in any California balloting, of course, is ; here are remarkably expensive, with a number of costly media markets. The Proposition 8 campaign, for example, cost more than $80 million, with spending some $43 million.

With the prospect of a November on same- in all but certain, pro- are gearing up for a bruising battle to preserve the state’s bill, signed by Gov. in May. Since January, to Marry has been ramping up a vast to identify pro- voters. Without a presidential or to bring voters out, to Marry Jesse Connolly said is essential to finding voters who support and to turning them out at the on .

Equality California, Jordan / Rustin Coalition Launch Mobilization Effort on Marriage for Same-Sex Couples in African-American Communities, Outreach Includes TV ad, on-the-ground organizing

Los Angeles – As same- who were able to legally marry last year celebrate their one-year-anniversaries, California () and Jordan / Coalition () are together launching an and on the to marry in LA’s African-American communities. The effort includes a TV commercial, on-the-ground and a dedicated field office, which will be based in South Los Angeles, a predominantly African-American community.

“Jordan / Coalition is happy to with California as we do the work to open the of all , including those in the Black community, on the question of for same- ,” said Ron Buckmire, board . “Our includes a multi-, and public and even the of staffing and supplies. I am confident that together we will see the day when full is restored to our state.”

As part of today’s , the organizations released a ad that features a African-, Xavier and -Haggood, along with three of their five children, Dante, Emmanuel and Fatima. The family lives in LA’s Leimert . Their ad is scheduled to air starting the week of June 22nd.

Fresno Hospital Bars Lesbian From Visiting Partner And Giving Advice About Her Treatment, ACLU and NCLR Urge Hospital To Adopt Policies Respecting Same-Sex Relationships

– After a was barred from visiting her and giving advice about her treatment at a , the American and the National Center for Rights sent a letter to the urging that it adopt policy changes respecting same- .

“We just couldn’t believe this was happening to us. This was the nightmare that we hoped we’d never have to live through,” said Teresa Rowe, who grew up in Clovis, California, but now lives in the Bay Area with her of four years, Kristin Orbin. “Unfortunately, because Kristin suffers from , trips to the hospital are pretty common for us, which is why we filled out the legal paper work to make sure I would be able to be with her and make emergency about her care. But the hospital wouldn’t let me see Kristen and ignored my advice about her treatment. They ended up giving her the exact I repeatedly asked them not to give her.”

On May 29, 2009, Rowe and Orbin attended the “Meet in the Middle” in support of for same- in Fresno. After the couple completed a 14-mile march in 90 , Orbin, who suffers from , collapsed in a seizure. The couple experienced from the , but Rowe was ultimately allowed to accompany Orbin to Community in Fresno. However, when the couple got the hospital, the driver would not allow Rowe to accompany Orbin into the even though Orbin had been in and out of consciousness, and Rowe was familiar with her and care.

Rowe repeatedly asked hospital employees to allow her to see Orbin and talk to a physician about her care but was refused. She volunteered to have Orbin’s legal naming Rowe as her care agent faxed to the hospital but was told that it wouldn’t do any good. When she asked that she at least be allowed to pass along the message that Orbin not be given the drug Ativan, she was told the message would be conveyed. If the message was given to those treating Orbin, it was ignored because Orbin was given the drug, which she didn’t need and which causes her unnecessary pain. Meanwhile, when she was awake, Orbin was also asking to be allowed to see Rowe. Although they were both told that no visitors were allowed in the area where Orbin was being treated, other patients were receiving guests. After being separated for several hours, Orbin finally saw her doctor. She complained to him, and Rowe was eventually allowed to be with her.

“Until the California upheld Prop 8, Kristen and Teresa were planning to get married. In this , must be especially diligent to protect same- from ,” said , a with the of Northern California. “As these so painfully demonstrate, no matter what hoops same- jump through to protect their , these kinds of horrible things will continue to happen as long as are denied the recognition and that only comes with .”

The letter sent by the and charges that it was a violation of state law for the hospital to discriminate against the couple based on their , as well as to refuse to recognize Rowe’s , which was authorized by Orbin’s advance care directive. The letter also notes that must post and follow a patient’s bill of rights that bars based on and patients the ability to designate visitors of their choosing and to decide who is able to make emergency decision about their care. The letter urges Community Medical Centers immediately to affirm their commitment to inclusive and sensitive for patients, and to take a number of steps to carry out that commitment.

Black Pastors and Gay Rights: DC Becomes a Battleground

The nation’s capital is suddenly center court in America’s loud argument over . Nothing new about that, except that this time the battle is being hashed out in the streets, and living rooms in working class wards of the city. While there is something poignant about both sides literally singing the same hymn (”We Shall Overcome”) at its , there is also something refreshing about the taking place in the unofficial part of Washington, D.C: For once, it’s not partisan.That is not to say it’s not a . pits race and together in the same combustible conversation, and does so in a community in which both are sacrosanct subjects. The black Christian church predates by more than two centuries, and served as a against the of , , and , , , crime, police and bad schools.
In the of all that, African-American and their have offered up and of family as twin defenses. Thus they have been an institution with a message that at its core is fundamentally . And at the same time, it was from the of these very same black that emanated the commanding that demanded to the old order. Make no , the and raw political power of the movement was rooted in these self-same . And in that sense they were a liberating, as well as a stabilizing, force.
These of and conservatism have coexisted, not always easily, for centuries within the church. But has opened a chasm in the black community, in which, to paraphrase (and modernize) who, while speaking about the North and South during the Civil War, observed that each side reads the same , prays to the same , invokes His against the other – and belongs to the same .
In the local of Washington, the true power brokers are predominately black, monolithically Democratic and tuned into the religious sensibilities of their . Thus, the discussion taking place here over is really a series of ; some within the black community and some within the Christian , and almost all of it within the . This is not altogether a bad thing. For starters, there’s no bogeyman, and for another, the race card is played to establish one’s bona fides, not to stoke . Finally, the church-bashing one finds in other places where this is taking place is muted here: Attacking the church would simply be a good way to lose the argument. And judging by the language being invoked by both sides, the stakes of this argument are high: Leaders of competing camps clearly believe that what unfolds here in unofficial Washington will be a harbinger for where this nation is heading on rights.

LOS ANGELES: All Saints, Pasadena, clergy opt out of civil marriages until gay couples can legally wed

at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, California, are opting out of performing until can legally wed–and are encouraging other to do likewise, according to the Rev. , rector.
“At the of ’s and All Saints’ historic mission is respecting the of every human being,” Bacon said in a announcing the decision, which is effective immediately.
“The California in its recent opinion has ruled that those of same-gender affections are second-class ,” Bacon added. “Denying to a certain classification of humanity is blatant with which our governing board, the other of All Saints, and I will not participate. We invite other and to join us in this stand for .”
Bacon referred to the May 26 state ruling that upheld the 8, a providing that “only between a man and a is valid in California.” Their decision sparked by both and of the measure.
The Rev. , an associate at the Pasadena congregation known for its social and progressive , said on June 4 that are meeting with whose were already planned “to explain the new policy and hold pastoral about the impact on them.
“We only do member , so folks married here at All Saints typically share our values of and would be on board, we think, with making arrangements to have the civil part of their take place external to All Saints ,” said Russell, who is of Integrity , an for , , and Episcopalians.
But she added that: “We will continue to serve and marry them civilly if that’s what the couple prefers for whatever reason because that was the contract going in.”
All Saints vestry, at its June 2 meeting, had unanimously passed a resolution declaring that “the sacramental right of is available to all , but that the of will not sign civil certificates so long as the right to marry is denied to same- .”
The vestry’s decision acknowledged “our active in the discriminatory system of civil is inconsistent with ’s call to strive for justice and peace among all and the of every human being.” The resolution states “civil in the is, as a result of Proposition 8 and the Court’s decision, a constitutionally-mandated instrument of , which furthers and denies same- the fundamental dignities to which each human being is entitled,” Bacon said. Russell said there was little discussion in the vestry meeting. “It was just a no- that of course we want to take steps that keep us from being complicit in state-sponsored .
“I keep thinking I couldn’t be prouder to work at than I already am and then our keeps that make me even prouder,” Russell said. “It was it is such a part of the DNA of to stand with those in need of . This stand is so deeply rooted in our baptismal , it gives us such a strong theological place to stand. It feels like very firm foundation, indeed.”
The Rev. Neil Thomas of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in Los Angeles, a petitioner in the Proposition 8 case, said the 40-year-old 500-member congregation likewise is observing a on signing civil .
“We will not sign the ” for , said Thomas, whose ministry is primarily, but not exclusively, to the community. He is also the of California Faith for Equality, a progressive interfaith movement of about 6,000 , which submitted an amicus brief advocating that the California overturn Proposition 8.

Young, Queer and Reflecting on Organizing Around Marriage

I was in last week when the California announced its decision upholding Prop 8 and I took the opportunity to interview some of my in the community about their thoughts on the efforts to for .

Going into this project, I wasn’t sure what I’d hear. I knew from previous that many in my community of young, had questioned whether organizations should continue to prioritize recognition at the cost of other efforts.

While some folks were still questioning our community’s attention to , I heard from other folks that their opinions on the significance of had changed after they’d witnessed the mobilizations in the wake of Prop 8. One of the mobilizations and the of in the was that my seemed to have spent a of time trying to figure out how they felt about both personally and politically. As Jon, a in public at , said, became something he “had to take more of an opinion on.”

Voices of Witness Africa New documentary tells stories of gay Anglicans

Voices of Witness Africa is a new 30-minute intended to help Episcopalians listen to the views and of who are , , and () and to emphasize that is “not just a North American or European issue,” says the Rev. .

Co-produced by Black, rector of Christ the King Church in Kalamazoo/Texas Corners, Michigan, and , a writer and based in Fort Worth, Texas, the features who talk about their lives and their with and the church.

“The of folks from around the world need to be heard,” says Black.

Among those interviewed for the is the Rt. Rev. Christopher Senyonjo, retired bishop of the Diocese of West Buganda in the Anglican Church of Uganda, who a study and group for . “I’m sorry about what the church is saying. loves you, loves you,” Senyonjo says in support of . While he acknowledges that speaking out has been “very risky,” Senyonjo adds, “When you know the , it should make you free.”

Although is illegal in most , “several in the film cite cause for hope,” said a from the Chicago Consultation, a sponsoring of the .

“Many, many years ago, when the townships were in smoke and were dying, we never thought that we would be where we are now,” Yvonne Daki, manager of iThemba Lam Center of Inclusive and Affirming Ministries in South , says in the . “We will have one day a situation where can speak openly about their .”

For Black, one of the surprises when working on the was “how willing were to have their name and image used publicly, even when they knew their bishop would be receiving a copy of the film, and even when there could potentially be horrific for doing so … Their is incredible.”

Sherrod was most impressed how the interviewees’ “informs their actions every minute of every day. All of them spoke of as a intimate part of their lives, a presence who gives them hope and strength in the of terrible oppression and active , not only by the state, but in most cases by the in their country. To the depth of their was inspiring and humbling.”

“Viewers who have followed the plight of in will hear familiar and tragic stories of , and abuse,” the Chicago Consultation said. “However, they may also be surprised by the support and hope voiced by some of the film’s subjects, including African and .”

Black said that much can be found in the stories of hope that were heard — “hope that one day the church will have moved beyond the issues of that divide it.”

All the instruments of communion have supported a process of listening to the of throughout the Communion. At the 1998 , resolution 1.10 committed all the provinces of the Communion to a listening process. It was not until 2005 that the Listening Process was officially launched with the of a who would monitor the work being done, share the results and enable further listening.

The Anglican Consultative Council, the communion’s most representative policy-making body, in in May 2009 and supported the renewal of the Listening Process, which has received a 2.5-year grant from the Satcher Institute at the Morehouse School of in Atlanta, Georgia to run five “pilot ” around the communion.

The “ of is being released just before the ’s General Convention, which will be held July 8-17 in , California. “At the meeting, and will discuss both the church’s mission in the developing world and the of , , and ,” the Chicago Consultation said. “The film is being mailed in advance to all and . It is also being mailed to all of the Communion, including those who that are hostile to .”

“With General Convention approaching, some on what effect its actions might have on the part of the Communion that is more than the ,” said Black. “I think the film helps us to remember that there are of folks in the communion who are watching what the does.”
