Gays Step Up Efforts to Reverse Gay-as-Godless Stereotype

A groundbreaking about the lives of gay Americans that the Barna Group put out last week got surprisingly little attention. In my latest &; Country column for U.S. News Weekly, I tied the Barna ’s fascinating portrait of to the rights movement’s recent efforts to ratchet up and messaging. Much of the work is aimed at reversing the -as-Godless .

Here’s the top:

Though he was raised in the , Harry Knox knew he couldn’t become a minister in his because it doesn’t ordain openly . He enrolled in a of the more liberal but was eventually denied anyway. “My whole as an is an accidental ministry,” says Knox, 48, who now works at the Campaign, the nation’s largest rights group. “I would rather be a local pastor.”

Instead, since 2005, Knox has built ’s “ and program,” which works to combat the of the , , , and community as antireligious. “For far too long, organizations did not put religious at the of our efforts,” Knox says. “That’s a we’re making less often now.”

Those religious may be more plentiful than most Americans think. A out last week shows that most Americans pretty robust lives. While 72 percent of straight American describe their as “very important” in their lives, so do 60 percent of and . Almost as many, 58 percent, say they’ve made a personal and ongoing commitment to Christ.

And though they are much less likely than straights to share the beliefs of born-again —which comes as no , since most in the born-again condemn —the Barna found that 27 percent of do hold those beliefs. “Many in the Christian community assume there’s this significant between and in terms of beliefs and activities,” says , the country’s top on , who supervised the . “While there are statistically significant differences, it’s the narrow size of the that’s most surprising.”

The unleashed a torrent of hate , mostly from believers furious with Barna’s : that many are -believing . But more and more rights organizations are joining in stepping up efforts to highlight the beliefs of many Americans, largely through religious programs. And some religious and are to welcome and .

rights say that the 2004 election, when voters in 11 states passed bans that were heavily promoted through , was a wake-up call. To help counter the image of the battle as a fight between and religious Americans, , the National and , and other national rights quickly hired religious staff.

Gay Pride in Moscow: Report from a Chicago Activist

Andy , from the Liberation Network in Chicago, in last night. courtesy Glay Liberation Network.

By Andy in
, May 14, 2009 ( Liberation Network) – After 14 hours of flights, last night I found myself in Eastern for the first , warmly greeted by and who, despite , are organizing their fourth annual event in this city. This year’s event is dubbed ‘Slavic ’, denoting the significant of from around the region.
The previous three years’ have gone forward despite bans from the and from neo- in and skinhead garb. This year the not only banned the event, but for good measure, approved the anti-’ application to hold their own event this past Tuesday.
That same day, our countered with their own unsanctioned action at the Department of Registration of Acts of Civil Status – an by two to get a license.
Leading Slavic Alekseev said the action was inspired in part by a February at a license bureau in Chicago. The action received widespread international press coverage, including from the .
As I shadowed Alekseev around the city last night, press coverage if anything seemed to build, with ’s two cell phones ringing incessantly and meetings with Finish and Slovenian held near midnight just outside of .
Slavic is slated for this Saturday, amidst the big ‘ Fest’ being hosted this year by . For those not familiar with what is, think times ten, with a of and that puts Chicago’s to .
While our specific plans for Saturday are necessarily secret at this time, the is to cause maximum embarrassment to the government if they to arrest us or allow the neo- to attack.
In response to ’ application for a permit this year, Vladmir Pronin told the Russian Interfax that parades in the capital are “unacceptable - parades shouldn’t be allowed”.
“No one will dare to do it, such ‘braveheart’ will be torn to shreds,” he added. “The West can say we’re bad guys, but our will see it is right. Our country is patriarchal, that’s [] sums it up… I positively agree with the Church, with the , , especially with [Mayor] Luzhkov, who are convinced that man and should each other. It is established by and .”
However, have vowed to move forward with this year’s event despite the ’s threats.
“Mr. Pronin already showed his incompetency last year when his services were unable to prevent us unveiling a banner directed against the Mayor, right opposite his office,” said Alekseev.
The main event successfully took place nearby at the monument to the famous Russian composer, Peter Tchkaivosky, while the and neo- were hoodwinked in to thinking that it would take place outside of Mayor Luzhkov’s office.
Today at the start of a rights conference at an east of the city, I was joined by British rights and from around and Belorussia Minsk, Rostof, Sochi, Ufa, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Ekaterinbourg, Volgodonsk, Ryazan and of course .
As we gathered on a to go to the conference, Baev explained how a group of young from Ryazan, about 200 miles south of the capital, got involved in organizing this year’s Slavic :
“There is a very in the which prohibits so-called about homosexuality20and among minors. The law passed in 2006 and we had that said that is absolutely normal and we are proud of our situation. We picketed in front of schools in Ryazan and we were detained because it was illegal.”
Two were found guilty and fined 1500 roubles (about $45 US) each. Alekseev came to Ryazan to help in the campaign and in the appeal of their cases to the of .
Then, Sergey Yenin, 19, explained how he became involved in rights organizing in Belorussia :
“I felt myself to be from my early childhood, he explained.
“Last year I came to Minsk and there I got acquainted with some and I thought it would be great if I fought for my rights. There are a of who don’t fight for their rights, who don’t participate in such movements, and they just consume our achievements.
“For example, we fought for our club, our one club in Minsk. It was in danger of being closed [by the government], but it still exists, due to us.”
I asked Sergey if he had participated in Minsk before.
“Yes, of course. The most outstanding parade took place in 2001. But I didn’t participate because I was only 11 then. There were over 300 participating in this event and 300 watching. This was fabulous This was an historical moment in Belorussia.
“The last one took place in October of 2008. It was named Walk and it took place on the 11th of October 2008, the international day of coming out, and we organized a parade. It was a rather private, intimate event, there were fifty because we cannot organize such a public event because of our government.
“If we applied for an event, we would be denied.
“There is an action that takes place [each year] called Chernobyl Way, and all of the parties take place there, and our group participated last year and this year. Last year we raised the and there were a of bad comments about it, there were a of thre ats [of ]. There were such as Right Alliance, and they threaten us all of the time. This year we didn’t20raise our because the of the Belorussian National Front, the main party, they coordinated a call to us, do not raise your , not because we have anything against you, because our fight for clean air, free of radiation will turn into a fight for rights.”
I asked Sergey why he personally joined the 15 others for the ten hour from Belorussia to join this Saturday’s Slavic : “I [only] made the [to come] on May 12 because I was really very frightened about myself and my . I know that there is some information that is going to be canceled, and more than this, that are going to be beaten.
“Because this is my fight really. If I don’t go to the parade, who will go there? My reasons to come was to support my – and of course to support rights.”

Another seismic shift emanates from California — this time on gay …

The ground trembled again last week, another of one of the wrenching that always seem to start in California and across the nation’s political and cultural plates. This time it was same- , as the state took up the of Proposition 8, the November ballot that outlawed such .

The was the latest chapter in a saga that has enmeshed California, off and on, for . In 2000, voters banned same- . Last year, after became the first city in the state to marry , the cleared the way for such . returned fire with Proposition 8, which put the ban into the . Statements of some justices during Thursday’s indicated that the proposition probably will stand — at least for now.

There was an odd to it all. As with the modern movement, the antitax of the and a host of other less important, if useful, things — the comes to mind — California was first in the mix.

Despite our that the sun shines brighter on California’s golden , residents here are really not so different from everywhere else. Ponder surveys of voters taken in California and nationally, and the surprising is how similar we are. We are less white and more Latino, slightly richer and more educated, and we go to church a bit less. But we resemble the rest of the nation on many other — our age range, the number of kids living in our homes, and even our views on whether government, rather than businesses and individuals, should solve problems in a pinch.

The state does differ from the other 49, though, in its quest for change.

Stigma drives HIV-positive gay men’s sexual risk-taking

Roger , Friday, March 06, 2009

-positive men’s of stigma and by strongly influence their involvement in casual and discourage them from practicing many -reduction strategies, report in their II report published this week.

The men they interviewed wished to balance their desire for with a need to maintain their sense of , but were often unable to avoid which could result in transmission.

To follow up a similar study published a ago, Adam Bourne and interviewed 42 men with diagnosed about their and management of . The in-depth, qualitative focused on recent of (), and to take part in the study, men had to have had unprotected in the past year. Therefore it’s important to note that the study does not reflect the of the one-third of men with who do not practice in any given year.

The researchers attempted to include in the sample a mix of respondents from and Manchester as well as lower prevalence areas, and also ensure in terms of age and time since diagnosis.

All respondents were aware that they could transmit through , and almost all said that they would never want to be responsible for doing so. Men more recently diagnosed tended to be particularly preoccupied by this concern, often avoiding altogether for a period after diagnosis.

In terms of the other harms which unprotected could give rise to, men tended to feel that infections were rarely serious, although a few were more concerned about C. Whilst some recently diagnosed men felt that superinfection was an issue, men who had been diagnosed for longer usually believed that clinicians had deliberately exaggerated its importance.

Of more concern, however, were the emotional, psychological and social harms that unprotected could to. If men failed to live up to their own ethical guidelines, this could to inner turmoil. Moreover, some respondents described the perceived irresponsible behaviour of other -positive men in order to highlight their own . Having posed a threat both to a man’s positive sense of self and to the way in which other men saw him.

The researchers argue that men’s concerns about and stigma shape they way they manage . men vulnerable to significant harm, including violent reactions and about ex-partners using police investigations as retribution, as well as leading to emotional upset and problems finding . In a community that often remains hostile to with , men’s instinct for self-preservation often them to choose behaviours where is felt to be unnecessary.

For example, many men used saunas, not just because was readily available, but also because the men assumed that almost all other sauna users were -positive. Like online chat rooms or support group meetings, saunas were thought to be ‘ positive spaces’ where men had implicitly announced their status simply by being there. This allowed men to have unprotected there without an explicit discussion of status, but leaving them with their sense of personal integrity intact.

In some settings, some men tried to avoid but maintain their sense of by suggesting to that it would be a good idea to use a . Nonetheless one man described how these suggestions prompted one sexual to ask directly whether he had . When he said yes, the man became angry and left.

Another form of implicit that men tried was ticking ‘safer needs discussion’ on a internet . Few men explicitly advertised their status on their , but might mention it during private instant messaging. The respondents described ambiguities and misunderstandings in on the internet, but generally found that the internet enabled them to screen potential partners with less of or reprisal.

Nonetheless, the researchers found that men used reduction strategies to quite a limited extent. No respondents mentioned reducing the of anal intercourse or the impact that or a infection could have on the of transmission. Just a few men discussed the greater of infection for the receptive or the possible of withdrawing before ejaculation.

Some men did practice some form of sero-sorting (seeking partners of the same status) and respondents said that it allowed them to have uninhibited where status did not remain the most salient concern throughout.

Nonetheless the researchers stress that no man exclusively practiced sero-sorting in a way that could that both partners had the same status. was often implicit (by being in a sauna, for example) or was not reciprocal. The respondent may have made an upfront of status, and assumed that if his was ready to carry on without , then he must be positive too.

However the majority of men actually rejected the idea of sero-sorting. It was associated in their minds with high-, esoteric practices, and in the words of one respondent, men who are “going spreading it round because they are shagging willy-nilly”. Many men were at pains to distance themselves from this behaviour. They were appalled by the idea that unprotected could ever be a regular or planned activity, and so rejected sero-sorting, strategic positioning, withdrawal before ejaculation and other reduction strategies.

Nonetheless these same men had all had some unprotected . It tended to be described as an exceptional event, explained by circumstances such as substance use or a ’s insistence. The researchers make it clear that a number of men lacked the self- or negotiation skills to manage such situations. Many men aspired to use a every time, but were not able to fall back on reduction strategies when, for whatever reason, weren’t used.

In their the researchers note several consequences of related stigma: a to disclose and an encouragement to have anonymous ; some interviewees’ of other -positive men and their behaviour; a desire not to engage with the idea that is an integral part of ; and the to use -reduction strategies.

However they also note that, for many men, there are direct contradictions between their intentions and their behaviour. Many men construct systems of about that enable them to have the they desire, whilst feeling that they are ‘moral enough’. They believe they are behaving responsibly, but transmission may well be taking place.

The researchers recommend tailored prevention interventions for diagnosed men which take account of the centrality of stigma, and discuss unprotected in credible and informative ways. Moreover professionals need to improve their skills in engaging men with these issues.
