Maine House Takes Up Gay Marriage Bill Today
A vote is expected today in the Maine House that will likely seal the deal on gay marriage in the Legislature. The bill would then need to be signed by Governor John Baldacci, a gay marriage opponent, for it to become law. Senator Dennis S. Damon’s gay marriage bill (LD 1020) passed Thursday in the Senate. Opponents were expecting a fight in the chamber but the bill was approved with a robust 21 to 14 vote. All except ten of the bill’s 65 co-sponsors are in the House, where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2 to 1. Gay Protection Bill Introduced In Pennsylvania
Representative Dan Frankel introduced a gay protections bill in the Pennsylvania House yesterday, Frankel announced in a press release.
Frankel’s bill would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in the areas of housing, employment, and public accommodations by amending the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act.
Frankel, a Democrat from Allegheny County, said he has already gathered 78 co-sponsors from both parties.
“This legislation is critical to thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pennsylvanians who are trying to work and have a roof over their heads, and it enjoys substantial support from Pennsylvanians from every corner of the Commonwealth,” Jake Kaskey, policy and outreach coordinator for Equality Advocates Pennsylvania, said in a statement.

Mormons take lead on ’social’ bills
CHEYENNE — Mormons comprise more than 10 percent of the membership of the Wyoming Legislature, yet Mormon lawmakers are not known for voting as a bloc or working together to promote legislation.
That may be changing.
Mormons are taking a higher profile this session in promoting bills linked to controversial social issues including assisted suicide, gay marriage and abortion.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are the primary sponsors of bills dealing with all three topics, and a cadre of about eight LDS lawmakers have teamed up as the original co-sponsors of six related bills.
Members of that group say their collective support of the bills is more coincidence than strategy, and they insist that no Mormon caucus exists in the Legislature.
But watchdog and social-issue advocacy groups say it could be a troubling sign if LDS legislators are working to inject their religious beliefs into the lawmaking process.
