A Long Road Traveled

The I got as close to the as I did this week was many years ago— after the riots, when I was a 13-year-old from St. Margaret’s School in Lowell, Mass. We spelling bee kids didn’t make it into the that day—we stood outside as spoke to us from a . By then I already knew I was . Raised in a staunch Catholic home and taught (and tormented) by , I was certain that an open (that was the only term I knew back then) could never be allowed inside the . I knew nothing of the nascent -rights movement—it ’t reached Lowell in 1975. All I knew was that that whatever words there were to describe what I was, it would have to be suppressed forever. I assumed that I would have to either become a priest or figure out some other way to hide.

Thankfully, time marched on, and I eventually became a politicized college student rather than a candidate for the —and ultimately I kicked open my closet door and came out. But I can’t help thinking about that as I the reel of yesterday’s visit to the in my head. As the of , an for senior citizens, I was invited, along with some 200 other leaders, to join the Obamas in commemorating —which falls this year on the of the Stonewall riots.

I was accompanied by three : a couple who are 86 and 91, who reminisced about voting for and described as “the most inspiring since ,” and a and founder of the Liberation Front, an group formed in the , who proudly chose his over the worn by every other man in the room.

Apart from celebrating, we had gone to the to make a point: that older have to be included in the for progress. And we did what we came to do, with one of our (the ) even receiving a personal meeting with the and Mrs. . But as I stood with my , in the front row, some five feet from the presidential podium, I realized how intensely personal this experience was for me. I thought about how each member of the has had our own life’s journey—and each of us was moved deeply and differently by that moment.

Bitter loser Harry Jackson files lawsuit to force referendum against gay marriage in DC

See Harry Jackson, a , MD who is trying desperately to gain by forcing the District of ’s residents to on the issue of same- , and has reportedly turned to the courts to force the to approve his anti- voter . Based on Jackson’s repeated racially-tinged statements, he appears to believe that, because Washington is a majority African-American city, there are religiously- and culturally-based motivations for the city’s black residents to en masse for his socially . He and the who speak in unity at his side have an unyielding argument that are hijacking the movement in an to pit the interests of black community and community against one another — ignoring the obvious crossover or support that exists between them.

The Council has already rebuffed Jackson and his so-called “” of -waving by voting twice in favor of recognizing and marriages that have been performed legally in other . The Board of and also determined that that the intentions of Jackson’s would not be in-line with existing ordinances. Black Pastors and Gay Rights: DC Becomes a Battleground

The nation’s capital is suddenly center court in America’s loud argument over . Nothing new about that, except that this time the battle is being hashed out in the streets, and living rooms in working class wards of the city. While there is something poignant about both sides literally singing the same hymn (”We Shall Overcome”) at its , there is also something refreshing about the taking place in the unofficial part of Washington, D.C: For once, it’s not partisan. That is not to say it’s not a . pits race and together in the same combustible conversation, and does so in a community in which both are sacrosanct subjects. The black Christian church predates by more than two centuries, and served as a against the of , , and , , , crime, police and bad schools.
In the of all that, African-American and their have offered up and of family as twin defenses. Thus they have been an institution with a message that at its core is fundamentally . And at the same time, it was from the of these very same black that emanated the commanding that demanded to the old order. Make no , the and raw political power of the movement was rooted in these self-same . And in that sense they were a liberating, as well as a stabilizing, force.
These of and conservatism have coexisted, not always easily, for centuries within the church. But has opened a chasm in the black community, in which, to paraphrase (and modernize) who, while speaking about the North and South during the Civil War, observed that each side reads the same , prays to the same , invokes His against the other – and belongs to the same .
In the local of Washington, the true power brokers are predominately black, monolithically Democratic and tuned into the religious sensibilities of their . Thus, the discussion taking place here over is really a series of ; some within the black community and some within the Christian , and almost all of it within the . This is not altogether a bad thing. For starters, there’s no bogeyman, and for another, the race card is played to establish one’s bona fides, not to stoke . Finally, the church-bashing one finds in other places where this is taking place is muted here: Attacking the church would simply be a good way to lose the argument. And judging by the language being invoked by both sides, the stakes of this argument are high: Leaders of competing camps clearly believe that what unfolds here in unofficial Washington will be a harbinger for where this nation is heading on rights.
“The march towards is coming to this country, and you can either be a part of it or stand in the way,” David , one of two openly D.C. Council , declared on May 5, as the council approved his pro- measure.
“This is the of the ,” was the rejoinder offered by Bishop Harry Jackson, pastor of in , Md., and author of a seeking to have the question put on the ballot for every voter in Washington. “It’s a declaration of war.” See Black Pastors and Gay Rights: DC Becomes a Battleground
