Our Genders, Our Rights

NEW YORK, NY - - - The Issues Magazine launched “Our , Our Rights,” its Summer 2009 edition. A unique combination of articles, poetry, art and videos on a topic that is both utterly fundamental and wildly revolutionary: and .

Top writers discuss -selection , gender , “Intersex” self-identification and a first-hand account of forced roles inside a polygamist compound in Texas.

Publisher and Editor-in-Chief ’s , “Selecting The Same ,” provides philosophical and into the issue of -selection .

“There is one place where the definition of gender remains binary — in the womb. When it comes to sonograms, amniocentesis and standard pre-natal testing, there are no nuances. Here, the pronouncement, ‘It’s a girl,’ can translate into fierce and instant parental . The fact is that when the issue is ’ selection ,’ the same is always being selected — female.” For Hoffman, this issue highlights questions of , and the moral of women.

“It’s about separating the chooser from the choice,” writes Hoffman.

In “Busting Bogus and Beliefs” Mahin Hassibi notes: “For centuries, held that women owed allegiance and obedience to their husbands; children were the property of their fathers, who owned the children’s mothers.” Today, Hassibi says, discoveries in and may soon trump historical and cultural restrictions that wrongly women’s lives.

“My children would have undoubtedly been among the 439 seized in the ,” writes of the sweep through the polygamist compound. In, “American : Controls Women’s Destinies,” Jessop gives an inside view of the abuse, and of women’s bodies that continues today.

Writers also plunge into concerns. “ Pitfalls May Await the Applicant” by Victoria Neilson discusses the difficult process for trans applicants in the U.S. Eleanor Bader’s “Trans Care Is a Life and Death Matter” describes a pioneering program for trans patients in the South.

Photographic performer Tammy Rae Carland visualizes gender fluidity as the featured artist, and art editor Linda Stein conducts an interview with Elizabeth Sackler, whose for art resulted in a new center at the Museum.

Gays Step Up Efforts to Reverse Gay-as-Godless Stereotype

A groundbreaking about the lives of gay Americans that the Barna Group put out last week got surprisingly little attention. In my latest &; Country column for U.S. News Weekly, I tied the Barna ’s fascinating portrait of to the rights movement’s recent efforts to ratchet up and messaging. Much of the work is aimed at reversing the -as-Godless .

Here’s the top:

Though he was raised in the , Harry Knox knew he couldn’t become a minister in his because it doesn’t ordain openly . He enrolled in a of the more liberal but was eventually denied anyway. “My whole as an is an accidental ministry,” says Knox, 48, who now works at the Campaign, the nation’s largest rights group. “I would rather be a local pastor.”

Instead, since 2005, Knox has built ’s “ and program,” which works to combat the of the , , , and community as antireligious. “For far too long, organizations did not put religious at the of our efforts,” Knox says. “That’s a we’re making less often now.”

Those religious may be more plentiful than most Americans think. A out last week shows that most Americans pretty robust lives. While 72 percent of straight American describe their as “very important” in their lives, so do 60 percent of and . Almost as many, 58 percent, say they’ve made a personal and ongoing commitment to Christ.

And though they are much less likely than straights to share the beliefs of born-again —which comes as no , since most in the born-again condemn —the Barna found that 27 percent of do hold those beliefs. “Many in the Christian community assume there’s this significant between and in terms of beliefs and activities,” says , the country’s top on , who supervised the . “While there are statistically significant differences, it’s the narrow size of the that’s most surprising.”

The unleashed a torrent of hate , mostly from believers furious with Barna’s : that many are -believing . But more and more rights organizations are joining in stepping up efforts to highlight the beliefs of many Americans, largely through religious programs. And some religious and are to welcome and .

rights say that the 2004 election, when voters in 11 states passed bans that were heavily promoted through , was a wake-up call. To help counter the image of the battle as a fight between and religious Americans, , the National and , and other national rights quickly hired religious staff.

Black Pastors and Gay Rights: DC Becomes a Battleground

The nation’s capital is suddenly center court in America’s loud argument over . Nothing new about that, except that this time the battle is being hashed out in the streets, and living rooms in working class wards of the city. While there is something poignant about both sides literally singing the same hymn (”We Shall Overcome”) at its , there is also something refreshing about the taking place in the unofficial part of Washington, D.C: For once, it’s not partisan. That is not to say it’s not a . pits race and together in the same combustible conversation, and does so in a community in which both are sacrosanct subjects. The black Christian church predates by more than two centuries, and served as a against the of , , and , , , crime, police and bad schools.
In the of all that, African-American and their have offered up and of family as twin defenses. Thus they have been an institution with a message that at its core is fundamentally . And at the same time, it was from the of these very same black that emanated the commanding that demanded to the old order. Make no , the and raw political power of the movement was rooted in these self-same . And in that sense they were a liberating, as well as a stabilizing, force.
These of and conservatism have coexisted, not always easily, for centuries within the church. But has opened a chasm in the black community, in which, to paraphrase (and modernize) who, while speaking about the North and South during the Civil War, observed that each side reads the same , prays to the same , invokes His against the other – and belongs to the same .
In the local of Washington, the true power brokers are predominately black, monolithically Democratic and tuned into the religious sensibilities of their . Thus, the discussion taking place here over is really a series of ; some within the black community and some within the Christian , and almost all of it within the . This is not altogether a bad thing. For starters, there’s no bogeyman, and for another, the race card is played to establish one’s bona fides, not to stoke . Finally, the church-bashing one finds in other places where this is taking place is muted here: Attacking the church would simply be a good way to lose the argument. And judging by the language being invoked by both sides, the stakes of this argument are high: Leaders of competing camps clearly believe that what unfolds here in unofficial Washington will be a harbinger for where this nation is heading on rights.
“The march towards is coming to this country, and you can either be a part of it or stand in the way,” David , one of two openly D.C. Council , declared on May 5, as the council approved his pro- measure.
“This is the of the ,” was the rejoinder offered by Bishop Harry Jackson, pastor of in , Md., and author of a seeking to have the question put on the ballot for every voter in Washington. “It’s a declaration of war.” See Black Pastors and Gay Rights: DC Becomes a Battleground
