Those self-anointed “Christians” are hating again in Alameda
Those self-anointed “Christians” who hate gays (and lesbians and bisexuals and especially transgender folks) are at it again.
This time they are out howling against a program in Alameda, CA designed to protect LGBT kids (and the kids of LGBT parents) from being harassed at school.
These “Christians” - who undoubtedly believe they hate the “sin” and not the “sinner” are nevertheless ready to crucify these children on the cross of political expediency and fund raising priorities. They don’t care what happens to LGBT kids (and the kids of LGBT parents). All they care about is their right to let their kids grow up to be bullies, haters and bigots. After all, where would their “Christian” church be if people didn’t hate gay folk?
There’s nothing in the Alameda plan that prevents parents from teaching their kids that homosexuality is against their religion, morally wrong or bad. What the schools want to teach is that (whatever you believe about homosexuality) you can’t beat kids up because they are LGBT kids (or the kids of LGBT parents.
Is this a measure of acceptance? Only if you believe that the alternative of having kids bullied - sometimes to the pint of suicide - is acceptable in a country that claims to be the “Land of the Free,” let alone a “Christian nation.”
Protesting LGBT kids (and the kids of LGBT parents) is not negotiable. It is a whole lot closer to what Jesus had in mind than the empty rhetoric of these far right law firms that exist only to raise money by demonizing LGBT people and their allies.

“Traditional Marriage” Resolution Passes - Sioux City Sides with the Bigots
One of today’s most controversial topics drew passionate comments from Sioux City residents Monday, as the City Council debated a resolution supporting the “traditional” definition of marriage, between one man and one woman. “Because character, in my opinion, is all about faith and beliefs.” Councilman Ferris talked for several minutes Monday, explaining why he re-introduced the resolution after voting to table the measure in December, 2008. “Our belief system is at the base of those decisions.” He said morality is more important than being politically correct. He claimed the council ’skirted’ the issue when it tabled the resolution. “I have an obligation to my faith,” he explained. But after opening to public comment, some residents agreed with Councilman Rixner, echoing his argument that the resolution is none of the City’s business. “The separation of church and state, is that sacred, anymore,” said one resident. But voices like hers were outnumbered a dozen times over, in a room with few chairs to spare. Many argued for traditional marriage, but for different reasons. ”We will most certainly face the issue of polygamy,” said another supporter, continuing, “If we give them an inch, they’ll ask for a mile.

The bigots in charge of Florida’s Hillsborough County vote down proposal to study domestic partner benefits
TAMPA – A proposal to study the possibility of extending health benefits to the domestic partners of Hillsborough County employees was shot down by the county commission Thursday.
Newly elected commissioner Kevin Beckner said he put forth the proposal because the county is in the process of taking bids for employee health insurance — a process that only happens once every four years.
It was defeated 5-2.
The proposal and the vote came against the backdrop of the commission’s decision three years ago to ban any support of gay pride or gay causes.
Some accused Beckner, the County’s first openly gay commissioner, of breaking his promise not to campaign on a gay agenda.
That did not stop activists on both sides from arguing over the moral high ground.
“To extend this benefit is to affirm a behavior that is dangerous, costly and sinful,” said Donna Kunit.

Anti-Women and Anti-Gay “Walk for Life” will March Through San …
On January 24th, an anti-women’s rights and anti-gay march will take place in San Francisco. The Bay Area Coalition for Reproduction Rights (BACORR) is calling on human rights supporters to protest the so-called “Walk for Life” led by religious conservatives.
The “Unite to Fight the Right Wing” counter-protest will begin with a rally at San Francisco’s Music Concourse at Embarcadero and Market Streets at 10:30am. More Details
As part of this year’s protest, BACORR is also calling attention to the ICE raids against immigrant communities. Anita O’Shea, BACORR spokesperson writes “The ‘Walk for Life’ is part of a multi-pronged rightwing movement that includes bigots in suits as well as armed, vigilante Minutemen, clinic bombers, and gay bashers…..We must stop the blame game against women, immigrants and queers before the ultra-right gains momentum.”
In recent years the Catholic Church has helped push through two discriminatory acts, the “Conscience Rule” and Proposition 8. The “Conscience Rule” allows health care providers to refuse to fill a birth control prescription for “moral” reasons. BACORR co-chair Gemma Mirkinson responded to the institution of the Conscience Rule asking, “What’s next: refusing service to people with AIDS, or immigrants or transgender folks? This is nothing but bigotry sanctioned by the highest office of the land and applauded by the people who will trek through our city January 24.” See Anti-Women and Anti-Gay “Walk for Life” will March Through San …

LGBT Rights: The Civil-Rights Struggle of Generation Y
I’ve always felt connected to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. As a child, my family shared with me their stories of growing up in rural South Carolina during a time when being spat at or being called the N-word was more than just a common occurrence–it was applauded. And I, as a 23-year-old Black man, have had my own run-ins with racists and bigots, albeit not as severely as it was for my parents.

Bigots file Petions to strike down new gay-rights ordinance - Is hate a family value in Kalamazoo?
KALAMAZOO – Petitions seeking the repeal of a newly adopted city ordinance that extends discrimination protections to gays and lesbians in Kalamazoo have been filed.
City Clerk Scott Borling said former city commissioner and current Kalamazoo County Treasurer Mary Balkema officially turned over 189 pages of petitions that circulators said contained about 1,600 signatures.
Due to the New Year’s Day holiday Thursday, Borling said certification of those signatures will begin Friday.
Borling expects the process to extend into next week before it is officially determined that the petitions contain at least 1,273 signatures, the minimum Borling said are necessary to trigger reconsideration of the anti-discrimination ordinance.
Under the charter, if sufficient signatures are certified next week, the ordinance is immediately suspended and the Kalamazoo City Commission must either repeal the entire ordinance or put it on the ballot for city voters to decide.
That action must occur at the commission’s next business meeting, which would be Jan. 26.
The current ordinance expands existing housing and employment protections to include gays, lesbians and transgender individuals, protected classes that are not currently included in existing state and federal anti-discrimination laws.
