Humpday Isn’t Really About Gay Sex

Lynn Shelton’s , a sexual , opens with a pair of breeders in bed. A youngish , Ben (mumblecordeon ) and Anna (Alycia ), confess they’re too tired to procreate that night and then confess their mutual relief. As if in response, the at 2 a.m. and Ben’s long- college buddy, Andrew ( survivor ), stumbles in from deepest . Anna, who has never had the pleasure, watches the unexpected bromantic action with grim incredulity. Aggressively loud, demonstrative, and hairy, Andrew is a credible representation of Ben’s id.

Reuniting an uptight with a footloose old pal, Shelton’s third feature offers a (much) more of Kelly ’s Old Joy, also a sort of buddy movie, also shot in the . In this case, the weekend is steeped in sexual . , Ben has to retrieve from a house called “” — home to a bi cutie (the director herself) and an omnisexual assortment of roisterers. No orgies, but plenty of stoned dancing. Anna, who has prepared her dinner, sits home alone. She stews; Ben gets stewed. Prompted by news of an amateur — sponsored by a local alt-weekly — Ben finds himself proposing to costar with showoff Andrew in a mad , dude-on-dude action, totally straight, yet somewhere “beyond .” Maybe they’ll be famous. The only problem: Just who is going to bone whom?

Having thus invested its protagonists in a of “chicken,” played to justify their respective life , delivers some excellent . The scene where Andrew and Anna have a get-acquainted drink and Andrew inadvertently exposes Ben’s boastful lie that his wife has signed off on their “project” is pure Honeymooners. (Bang, zoom, straight to the moon!) Ben can’t tell Anna why he wants to have with Andrew, only that it’s very, very important to him. And, terrified that Ben might think he really did have a yen, Andrew can only sigh, “I wish I was more .” Of course. Just as Brüno is more of a comment on culture than the (or hate) that dare not speak its name, is actually less a than a satiric view of macho. Appreciative as Shelton may be of her dudes, she has another . Each in his own way, the guys have been freaked by a of assertive female — although the term “pussy-whipped” is never used.

New Study Finds Gap in LGBT Health Services

With all the media coverage lately around , as well as around , it is ironic that so little is really known about the lives and needs of , , and () . This lack of specific information on the community is not just an ; policymakers, especially those in government, demand real numbers to document the of problems. This is particularly true in these tough , as funders, and state agencies rightly demand efficient programs that are targeted like on specific, documented problems. In this context as with so many things, knowledge equals power: the power to allocate resources and work to fix these problems.

At the national level, researchers have estimated that lag behind on seven of the ten set by the U.S. government to improve nationally, called Healthy 2010. A Long Road Traveled

The I got as close to the as I did this week was many years ago— after the riots, when I was a 13-year-old from St. Margaret’s School in Lowell, Mass. We spelling bee kids didn’t make it into the that day—we stood outside as spoke to us from a . By then I already knew I was . Raised in a staunch Catholic home and taught (and tormented) by , I was certain that an open (that was the only term I knew back then) could never be allowed inside the . I knew nothing of the nascent -rights movement—it ’t reached Lowell in 1975. All I knew was that that whatever words there were to describe what I was, it would have to be suppressed forever. I assumed that I would have to either become a priest or figure out some other way to hide.

Thankfully, time marched on, and I eventually became a politicized college student rather than a candidate for the —and ultimately I kicked open my closet door and came out. But I can’t help thinking about that as I the reel of yesterday’s visit to the in my head. As the of , an for senior citizens, I was invited, along with some 200 other leaders, to join the Obamas in commemorating —which falls this year on the of the Stonewall riots.

I was accompanied by three : a couple who are 86 and 91, who reminisced about voting for and described as “the most inspiring since ,” and a and founder of the Liberation Front, an group formed in the , who proudly chose his over the worn by every other man in the room.

Apart from celebrating, we had gone to the to make a point: that older have to be included in the for progress. And we did what we came to do, with one of our (the ) even receiving a personal meeting with the and Mrs. . But as I stood with my , in the front row, some five feet from the presidential podium, I realized how intensely personal this experience was for me. I thought about how each member of the has had our own life’s journey—and each of us was moved deeply and differently by that moment.

Based on Jackson’s repeated racially-tinged statements, he appears to believe that, because Washington is a majority African-American city, there are religiously- and culturally-based motivations for the city’s black residents to en masse for his socially . He and the who speak in unity at his side have an unyielding argument that are hijacking the movement in an to pit the interests of black community and community against one another — ignoring the obvious crossover or support that exists between them.
