Equality California, Jordan / Rustin Coalition Launch Mobilization Effort on Marriage for Same-Sex Couples in African-American Communities, Outreach Includes TV ad, on-the-ground organizing

Los Angeles – As same- who were able to legally marry last year celebrate their one-year-anniversaries, California () and Jordan / Coalition () are together launching an and on the to marry in LA’s African-American communities. The effort includes a TV commercial, on-the-ground and a dedicated field office, which will be based in South Los Angeles, a predominantly African-American community.

CA Supreme Court Upholds Student Civil Rights Act

(Sacramento, June 1, 2009) –Today, a Sacramento dismissed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate SB 777, the , which prohibits against students on the basis of race, , , gender, and . The lawsuit was brought by a right-wing group that specifically objected to protections for , , and students. The court held that the had failed to show any way in which the statute was even allegedly unlawful.

The lawsuit was filed on November 5, 2008. State Jack O’Connell, represented by California , filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on January 8, 2009. FRESNO, CA – In the first statewide following the California rulings which upheld the ban on same- , , , and () and will gather in Fresno on Saturday, May 30th in to support full federal . This all-inclusive event will attract supporters of social justice and from across California and ask them to renew their to fight for the rights of individuals who currently to have their rights protected. Meet in the Middle is the beginning of a movement for today’s generation. In a symbolic sign of to the of the past and present, the event begins with a five-hour 14.5-mile March from , California to downtown Fresno, California. The march and is the result of a major effort, modeled after ’s campaign relying on the Internet and word of mouth. Traditionally, the rights movement has concentrated efforts in major , but demographics from November 2008 reflect that this approach did not garner the expected results. LGBT Prisoner Safety Act Passes Assembly with Bipartisan Support

Sacramento – The California passed the Prisoner Safety , AB 382, today by an of 64-9. The bill garnered significant . Sponsored by California () and introduced by (D – ), the bill is designed to prevent against , , , and () in the system. The bill received more votes than any other piece of sponsored by .

“The sent a powerful message today that all deserve protection from ,” said Geoff Kors. “This vital bill seeks to end abuse and assault against , ensuring they receive equal and fair protection under the law.”

According to a recent study from the ¬fornia Department of Corrections and Re¬habilitation, 67 percent of inmates report being sexually assaulted by another inmate, a rate 15 times higher than the overall prison .

By amending the in Detention Elimination (SADEA) of 2005 to include and on the list of factors for consideration when classifying and housing , the promotes safety for and prevents assault against in the prison system. The list of factors currently includes age, gender, type of offense, and prior time served.

“All deserve basic protections – including those serving time in our ,” Ammiano said upon introducing the bill. “No prisoner should for his or her life or be the of abuse because of his or her or .”

The bill developed following a meeting held in this past December and chaired by Senator and former Gloria (D-Los Angeles). The meeting, which was sponsored by along with Just Detention International, the Law Center, National Center for Rights, and the Gender-Variant and Intersex , the dire issues facing in California prisons in order to produce solutions. The Prisoner Safety is an important step toward ensuring the safety of this highly vulnerable . Last month, the bill passed the Assembly unanimously by a 7-0 .

Bill Making Identification Change More Accessible for Transgender Persons Passes Key Assembly Committee, Moves One Step Closer to Becoming State Law

Sacramento – The Equal ID took one step closer to becoming law today when it passed the by a 7-3 . The bill, sponsored by California () and introduced by Lieu (D – ), increases the legal rights and recognition enjoyed by by clarifying that qualified born in California can return to the county of their birth to obtain a court order reflecting their correct gender and accompanying name change. The court order is then used to obtain a corrected California .

“All deserve that accurately reflects who they are,” Geoff Kors said. “Once passed, this law will make it easier for both in California and beyond to obtain , apply for , and live their lives as full and equal of society.”

Until recently, only allowed persons to the court for an order recognizing a change of gender in the county in which they presently reside. Last month, the Law Center successfully challenged the in the California . In Somers v. , the court held that the violated the equal protection rights of California-born residing out of state. The Equal ID is the next step in ensuring that all are able to obtain accurate .

“The Equal ID would bring the and up to date with ,” said Kristina Wertz, of the Law Center. “It would alleviate any and ensure that California-born residing in other states know that they, too, can be afforded the of a that reflects who they truly are.”

The new bill ensures that born in California know that they can return to the county of their birth to obtain a corrected . It also provides greater access to persons living in the state, allowing them for first time to the court in their home counties.

“The Equal ID would make it clear to others in my situation that they can go back to the counties in which they were born to get a court order changing their gender. It would save all the trouble I went through finding and spending nearly four years in the courts,” said Gigi Marie Somers, who testified at this morning’ hearing. Ms. Somers, a born in California, was unable to obtain a new in the , where she now resides. Ms. Somers was the in the legal action brought by the Law Center.

“The rights of should not end at our state’s borders,” Leiu said. “The Equal ID makes certain every Californian has the and liberty to be true to his or herself.”
