Australia moves to protect gay couples’ rights
Australian legislators approved sweeping amendments Monday to about 100 laws to give gay and lesbian couples rights that are equal to those of their straight counterparts, but stopped short of endorsing equal marriage rights. The changes confer parental rights on gay and lesbian couples with children, allow families to benefit under the state-run health program and pave the way for individuals to bequeath retirement benefits to their partners.
