Spock vs. Kirk on … gay marriage?

The marriage of recent “Heroes” actor and “Star Trek” icon George Takei to his longtime partner Brad Altman drew fellow spacefaring alum Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) and Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov), who were maid of honor and best man respectively, along with 200 other guests to a downtown Los Angeles ceremony.

But no Spock or Kirk.

Leonard Nimoy said he sent well-wishes in the outdated form of email, but William Shatner, whose rift with Takei has been chronicled, apparently wasn’t invited.  They should’ve been there, though, seeing as how the relationship between Spock and Kirk was one of the few on TV — especially in a sci-fi universe — that had connotations of possible guy-on-alien action!  The “Spirk” phenomena was not widely discussed in the mainstream, but those who’ve been in and around the Trek universe have heard the rumors.

Our Dish Rag column caught up to the Captain and the Vulcan, with Nimoy expressing his opposition to the anti-gay-marriage legislation Proposition 8. Shatner, though, seemed to either not know, or care much, calling the questioning (or the proposition itself?) “dissident.” Umm … Hmmmm …  Uhh … Here’s Karl Urban, the new Leonard “Bones” McCoy, talking about being a Trekkie!
