Largest LGBT Circulation in History as America’s Leading LGBT Newspapers Unite for October as Gay History Month
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Celebrants of October’s Gay History Month will have a new way to look at their community with Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama addressing LGBT concerns and Sir Elton John talking about his work with the Elton John AIDS Foundation as the nation’s largest collection of leading LGBT newspapers partner to recognize national and local pioneers from the LGBT community.
Also featured in this year’s national Gay History Month observance is a chat with the creative team behind the new film “Milk” which examines the Harvey Milk assassination and the struggle for equality, and “Black Gay History” by Harvard fellow Dr. Kevin Munford.
Last year — the second year of the Gay History Project — 30 LGBT newspapers from across the country participated, and this year, their numbers will rise.
Mark Segal, publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News and the founder and coordinator of the Gay History Project said, “Local gay newspapers are the most complete, comprehensive record of LGBT history; no individual, organization or traditional medium has the knowledge and experience that make up our nearly 40 years of coverage.”
Among the publications taking part are Philadelphia Gay News, Dallas Voice, Chicago’s Windy City Times, Michigan’s Between The Lines, Boston’s Bay Windows, L.A.’s Frontiers, San Francisco’s Bay Area Reporter, Seattle Gay News, Echo Magazine of Phoenix, Ariz., Washington, D.C.’s Metro Weekly, Out Front Colorado, Minnesota’s Lavender Magazine, New York’s Empty Closet, San Diego’s Gay and Lesbian Times, insideOut of Nashville, Cleveland’s The Gay People’s Chronicle, Q Salt Lake, Vital Voice of St Louis, Tampa’s Gazette, She Magazine, Indiana’s Reality Magazine, Baltimore’s OUTloud, New Mexico Voice, Tennessee’s Out and About, Metroline of Hartford, CT and Outword in Sacramento, CA.
Participating publications have a combined print circulation of over eight hundred and fifty thousand — not including Web presence — making the Gay History Project the largest LGBT media promotion in the history of the gay press.
