First Anti-Gay marriage TV Ads Airs – LGBT Groups still Trail in Money Race

As LGBT groups and their allies continue to trail in the race to raise money and defeat Prop 8,  the “Yes on Proposition 8 campaign” released its first TV ad today. Titled “Whether You Like It or Not,” the ad shows San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom arrogantly speaking of gay marriage, declaring to Californians, “The door’s wide open now. It’s gonna happen, whether you like it or not!”  Then  the ad features Pepperdine University Law Professor Richard Peterson making ridiculous claims about “the many consequences to society at large – especially children – if the Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling is not reversed.” Pepperdine University’s law school is better know for its ultra-conservative theology than its standing as a school of law.

Some of the falsehoods claimed in the ad include:

 –  People being sued for their personal beliefs – not going to happen because it is already illegal to discriminate against LGBT people in California.

 –  Churches opposed to gay marriage being threatened with loss of their tax exempt status – not going to happen (and they know it) – the law will NOT require  a church to perform a gay (or straight) marriage. PERIOD!

 –  And most importantly, gay marriage being taught in public schools – false again – kids are not going to be taught how to be in gay marriages.

These lies may drown out the truth – unless you step up with a contribution to help fight Prop 8.  The Roman Catholic Knights of Columbus and the Mormom Church are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the yes on Prop 8 campaign. It is time for each of us to step up and help protect California’s fair marriage laws.
