Kevin Cathcart, Executive Director of Lambda Legal writes: We all celebrated another historic victory this past weekend as Connecticut joined Massachusetts and California in supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples. We are thrilled about this news, and send our warmest congratulations and thanks to our colleagues at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and to the courageous plaintiffs who fought for and won the freedom to marry.

In a 4-3 decision, the majority stated: “Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same-sex partner of their choice. To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others.” Lambda Legal was proud to have filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of this case. This most recent victory in Connecticut gives couples everywhere reason to rejoice, but the fight for marriage equality is far from over. Election Day is close at hand and antigay forces are still hard at work to change the California constitution in order to eliminate the freedom to marry for same-sex couples who now enjoy this fundamental liberty. On November 4, don’t forget to vote “no” on Proposition 8 and make sure your friends and loved ones vote “no”, too. We also urge you to give as generously as you can right now to the “No on Prop 8″ campaign so that our message about fairness and opportunity for same-sex couples and their families can be heard loud and clear. Marriage equality is now a reality for same-sex couples in three states and history is clearly on our side. It’s very important that each and every one of us does as much as we can to protect this fundamental liberty for all couples.
