One of a group of men involved in an anti-gay assault on a gay man on Davie Street in Vancouver over the weekend faced a judge Monday.
“Michael Kandola (pictured), 20, of Vancouver, appeared in Vancouver Downtown Community Court Monday accused of assaulting Jordan Smith, 27, of White Rock…However, Crown counsel Andrew Cochrane told Judge David Pendleton that the assault “was not a community court matter” and Kandola was ordered to appear in provincial court today. Cochrane said information was being prepared concerning new charges against Kandola that would have to be dealt with in provincial court. The assault charge could be upgraded to assault causing bodily harm or the more serious offence, aggravated assault.”
Smith was slated to have surgery to repair his jaw on Monday that would require it to be wired shut for up to six weeks. Law enforcement authorities have urged that Kandola be charged with a hate crime, which would allow for heavier penalties.
Kandola was released from custody Saturday. He left the court with his head down and left in a waiting vehicle.

As a member of the gay community I would just like to say what a sick b*****d this guy is…… unfortunately i feel that he will only be given a slap on the wrist but if true justice was to prevail he should spend a good 20 years in prison being someone else B***H…. He is a disgrace to visible minorites who have had to go through their own stuggles to be accepted in this world and for someone of a visible minority to attack and inflict pain upon another member of a visible minority(Gays) is an outrage. I am not only a member of the gay community but am also of a visible minority and this makes me sick…… In know way is this inccident going to make me think twice about holding my partners hand walking down the street because if we the gay community show weakness toward these biggots we will never win this battle. I want all gay,lesbian,bi-sexual and transgendered individual to stand up and show these uneducated,intolerant fools that we deserve just as much as they do to walk the streets without fear. oh and if this ass kandola has so much hate towards gays then why the hell was he on davie street and have you seen him??? i think he is questioning his own sexuality….. REAL men are comfortable with their own sexuality and the sexuality of others Micheal Kandola is a “pussy”. He needs to also remember that behind every woman is a gay friend remember that.
