Senate Okays Bill to Require HIV Testing in Prisons

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill on Thursday that would require HIV antibody testing and counseling for all incoming inmates and follow-up testing to be available annually. Prisoners potentially exposed to HIV while incarcerated could request follow-up testing and counseling at any time. All HIV-positive inmates also would be guaranteed consistent, comprehensive medical treatment, including antiretroviral medications, while incarcerated.
