With the majority of Americans blaming the GOP for the dramatic downturn in the U.S. economy over recent weeks, Barack Obama has for the first time since the beginning of September, taken the lead over Sen. John McCain in national polls. According to an average of nine leading national polls, Obama now leads McCain by 1.7 percentage point among likely voters.
