Lord Mayor wants Perth gay friendly

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi wants to make Perth a gay-friendly city to rival Sydney and San Francisco, saying the location, climate and lifestyle of the west coast capital engenders the kind of opportunities seen in the bigger cities.

In a clear break from the views and tradition of her predecessor Peter Nattrass, Perth’s first woman Lord Mayor opened the 2008 Pride Festival this week with the words “Gay, straight, who cares?”.

Her comments come as the aggressive work of a reshaped Pride committee kicks in for an expanded and reinvented Pride festival, starting with its Northbridge Fairday tomorrow and culminating with the traditional parade on October 25.

To Ms Scaffidi, the issue of sexuality is something that “we should be so over by now”.
