The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect the community’s lives.

In celebration of UK-based Graham Norton hosting the GLAAD Media Awards in New York for the first time, GLAAD will reward one viewer with a trip to London, England, courtesy of Visit Britain and American Airlines.

Comedian and talk show host Graham Norton crossed the Atlantic from London to introduce Barbara Walters, Kevin Bacon, and Tim Gunn during the GLAAD Media Awards in New York, while Janet Jackson, Sharon Stone, Kathy Griffin and cast members from Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty celebrated LGBT inclusion on TV at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles.

Viewers of the upcoming GLAAD Media Awards broadcasts on Bravo Network can review trivia questions about the ceremony prior to the airings at www.glaad.org/mediaawards/19thAnnual/MAcontest.php. Viewers can submit answers to the questions beginning on Monday, September 29, 2008 6 pm eastern time and before October 3, 2008 at 12 am eastern time by e-mailing MediaAwardsContest@glaad.org.  One viewer who correctly answers three of the five questions will win a Visit Britain prize package that includes:

  2. Four nights accommodation at The Montague on the Gardens Hotel in London’s Bloomsbury District courtesy of Red Carnation Hotels that includes full English breakfast and complimentary afternoon tea.

GLAAD also announced an open call for submissions and dates of next year’s 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies. Creators of LGBT inclusive films, news segments, magazine articles, television programs, comic books, music and advertising are encouraged to submit work they completed in 2008 for consideration in 26 English and 17 Spanish-Language categories. More information and eligibility requirements are available here: http://www.glaad.org/mediaawards/20thAnnual/submission.php.

The 20th Annual Awards will be handed out in New York City on March 28, 2009 at the Marriott Marquis; in Los Angeles on April 18 at the Nokia Theatre; in San Francisco on May 9 at the San Francisco Hilton and in South Florida on May 16 at the Eden Roc Resort.

Media projects with LGBT images are evaluated as nominees using four criteria: Fair, Accurate and Inclusive Representations; Boldness and Originality; Impact; and Overall Quality.

Nominees are selected by juries comprised of volunteers with interest and expertise in the particular media category they are judging.  The call for submission is in addition to year-round media monitoring completed by the juries. Nominating juries may select up to five nominees in each category and submit their list of recommended nominees to GLAAD’s staff and Board of Directors for final approval. Nominees will be announced at a press conference held at Queer Lounge in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival in January 2009.
