A new high school course called Social Justice 12 won’t be going ahead in Abbotsford schools this year because the local school board wants to review its content, the Vancouver Sun reports.

The Ministry of Education’s own Integrated Resource Package (download it here) describes the course as follows:

The aim of Social Justice 12 is to raise students’ awareness of social injustice, to enable them to analyse situations from a social justice perspective, and to provide them with knowledge, skills, and an ethical framework to advocate for a socially just world.

The Sun quotes BC Teachers Federation president Irene Lanzinger as suspecting that content about homosexuality has prompted this move by the school board in what is a highly religious community:

“I can’t say for sure, but I suspect that the content of the course that the Abbotsford board had difficulty with, was the content around the rights of gay and lesbian people. The issues around homophobia. And that is very problematic.”
