Democrats forge “historic” platform backing LGBT rights
Although the final draft of the Democratic National Committee platform doesn’t include the words “gay,” “lesbian,” “bisexual” or “transgender,” it is being described as “historic” in its support of LGBT rights by out U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., who is a member of the platform-drafting committee. The document, which must be submitted for approval during the Democrats’ convention this month in Denver, uses the terms “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” in sections that call for the repeal of the military ban and oppose a federal marriage ban.
