Thanks to Outfest’s Legacy Project, the groundbreaking, at turns devastating and refreshing 1978 documentary Word is Out screened at the Director’s Guild of America to a packed house. Released a mere three years before the first utterances of AIDS, Word is Out is a visual, historical document of pre-AIDS gay and lesbian triumphs and struggles. Plus Sarah Waters fans descended upon the Director’s Guild for her third book to film adaptation, Affinity.
