An exclusive new KTVU field poll shows that for the first time ever, a majority of Californians support same-sex marriage.

It is a historic shift in attitudes, and a new and younger generation may be responsible.

51 percent of Californians surveyed by the field poll said they approve of same sex marriage. 42 percent disapprove and seven percent had no comment.

Statewide, Californians have historically been against same sex marriage.

Mark DiCamillo, director of The Field Poll in California, has tracked the issue for thirty years. In the 70s and 80s, Californians were against gay marriage by a more than two to one ratio.

In recent years, that gap narrowed. And now, for the first time, a majority is open to the idea.

“It is an historic change in sociologic terms. There seems to be generational replacement going on,” explains DiCamillo. “Younger voters are much more accommodating to allowing same sex marriage than older voters. So as younger voters start replacing older voters, they will ultimately become the majority.

The poll reveals regional splits: coastal Californians favor allowing same sex marriage; people who live inland oppose it. Religion makes a difference too. People who describe themselves as Protestant or Catholic are against same sex marriage. People in other religions are a bit more open to it, but people who say they have no religious preference are overwhelmingly in favor of allowing gay marriage with a 81% responding positively in the poll.

DiCamillo says he thinks the historic State Supreme Court ruling earlier this month legalizing same sex marriage may have accelerated the trend toward acceptance. Poll Shows Majority Support For Same-Sex Marriage
