Sacha Baron Cohen Terrorizes Kansas Airport in Hotpants

Sacha Baron Cohen, who is in Kansas shooting his film Bruno, which centers around his gay Austrian news reporter character, has been terrorizing various locations around the state, including Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport:

Bruno_3“Officials there are reviewing its media policies after the so-called German documentary film crew made a scene inside the main terminal on Friday. ‘We were lied to,’ says Assistant Airport Director Brad Christopher. ‘We were duped.’ Authorities say the film crew was not who they said they were. Last month, the group contacted Wichita airport officials about shooting part of their documentary on American culture at Mid-Continent. They arrived Friday and were shown around. Airport employees say they seemed professional. That is, until the cameras came on and the clothes came off. Witnesses say it almost looked like pornography. In the middle of the terminal, the film crew began stripping down. They were escorted out of the airport by police, and told to leave. Wichita Police, along with the Attorney General, are investigating the prank. Airport officials say it wasn’t necessarily illegal, but it was unethical and highly inappropriate for a public location where security is paramount.”

AFTER THE JUMP, a fairly old clip of ‘Bruno’ interviewing some wrestlers on Spring Break at Daytona Beach:

KAKE adds to the Kansas report: “Several locations in Kansas were targeted last week by a film crew claiming to be making a film about culture in America. Their actions have people across the state wondering whether they’ve been part of a ‘Borat’-like prank. Pastor Greg Smith of Central Community Church says they were contacted by the film crew and were told they were working on a film to be shown in Europe. Smith agreed to let them film the Easter play being performed at the church. However, at some point, fellow Pastor Clint Dunn knew something was not right. In security camera footage from the church, you can see crew members making preparations to cover the security cameras before attempting to pull off their prank. Smith says one of the crew members was dressed ‘biblically’ and covered with chains. He believes they were going to disrupt the play going on inside the church at the time. Dunn quickly took action to prevent that from happening. He locked the doors and abruptly told the audience good-bye.”

Family Research Council’s Sprigg Apologizes for Anti-Gay Remarks

Last week I posted an item about the Family Research Council’s Peter Sprigg, who was interviewed by the Medill Reports about the Uniting America Families Act, which would eliminate discrimination with regard to foreign partners of gay and lesbian citizens, allowing them to obtain permanent resident status in the same way that spouses do.

SpriggSprigg told Medill Reports: “I would much prefer to export homosexuals from the United States than to import them into the United States because we believe homosexuality is destructive to society.”

In a statement on the group’s blog yesterday, Sprigg apologized for his statement, but not for his support of current immigration policy:

Said Sprigg: “In an interview with Medill News Service that was posted on the Internet last week, I discussed FRC’s opposition to an immigration bill that would allow foreign nationals who are the same-sex partners of American citizens to immigrate to the United States on the same basis as foreign spouses of American citizens. FRC does not believe that homosexual relationships are the equivalent of marriage, and we therefore oppose any legislation that would treat such relationships as the equivalent of marriage. In response to a question regarding bi-national same-sex couples who are separated by an international border, I used language that trivialized the seriousness of the issue and did not communicate respect for the essential dignity of every human being as a person created in the image of God. I apologize for speaking in a way that did not reflect the standards which the Family Research Council and I embrace.”

Madonna Doesn’t Need an Excuse to See Timberlake’s Butt

Madonnavf2

Here’s the cover of Vanity Fair‘s new Green Issue, featuring Madonna. Maybe they told M-Dolla the “Green” issue was about money.

She called in to Z100 yesterday and said she wouldn’t be singing some of her past hits ever again unless she got a lot of it: “I’m not sure I can sing ‘Holiday’ or ‘Like A Virgin’ ever again. I just can’t – unless somebody paid me like $30 million or something. [Like if] some Russian guy wants me to come to the wedding he’s going to have to a 17-year-old, you know it.”

She also told the hosts why she administered a B-12 shot to Justin Timberlake’s hind quarters when they were recording Hard Candy:

“First of all, I’ve seen enough butt … The reason I gave him a B-12 [shot] is because we only had a certain amount of days in the studio and I didn’t want him to use that as a lame-ass excuse not to come to work. Okay? It’s got nothing to do with butt. I promise you. Listen, I don’t need to give him a shot to see his butt. Duh.”

McCain’s Lunatic Minister Backtracks

Televangelist Reverend John Hagee, who has endorsed Arizona Republican Senator John McCain for president, went squishy on some of his anti-Catholic – he has a record of calling that Church “the great whore” – and anti-gay pronouncements in a New York Times Magazine interview. Asked about his “much quoted comment that Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment for a gay-rights parade in New Orleans,” Hagee said, “That’s so far off-base it would take us 33 pages to go through that, and it’s not worth going through.” But on National Public Radio in 2006, Hagee specifically cited “a homosexual parade” as an example of “a level of sin that was offensive to God” in New Orleans and the precipitate for Katrina. GLAAD LAUNCHES “NEWSROOM ’08″ WEB SITE

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has launched “Newsroom ’08,” a Web site which will serve as a resource on how media talk about issues affecting to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community as they pertain to the local, state and national elections in November.  The national media advocacy organization’s dedicated microsite has a blog, “Read Between the Lines,” where commentary on and analysis of election coverage will be posted, as well as resources for both community members and media professionals.

“At GLAAD, we’re in the business of helping to change hearts and minds about issues affecting the LGBT community,” said GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano.  “Election years give us increased opportunity to talk about our issues and to hold media accountable for fair, accurate and inclusive coverage.  Newsroom ’08 provides a unique analysis and insight on media coverage of the November elections as they pertain to LGBT issues.”

Newsroom ‘08 provides expansive educational resources for journalists and community members.  In addition to “Read Between the Lines,” community members can learn when GLAAD staff will be in their area conducting the organization’s signature Media Essentials Training Workshops to help advocates become more effective in their media work.  There are also ways to be more involved locally and access video clips of recent news coverage.

“GLAAD has been hard at work holding media accountable at the national and local levels,” said Rashad Robinson, GLAAD’s senior director of programs.  “Newsroom ’08 gives journalists and community members additional resources to move beyond oversimplification and to promote election coverage that portrays the LGBT community and issues in a fair, accurate and inclusive light.”

Journalists can find GLAAD’s Media Reference Guide, the go-to reference guide and style book for media professionals in their coverage of LGBT issues, which will soon be updated with a special focus on the 2008 elections.  Newsroom ’08 and its many resources can be found at http://newsroom08.glaad.org.
