Taking to Twitter, Smith said: “I have some absolutely fantastic news for you all, sorry if I haven’t managed to speak to you over the weekend in person. Last week, I asked Mr. Greig Fairweather to marry me.

“And he said yes! Beyond thrilled, happy and excited. Haven’t stopped smiling!”

Later tweeting again, Smith posted to thank the staff of the First Dates restaurant, saying: “Hey @FirstDates @fredsirieix1 @CiCi_Coleman @austinventour. Remember seeing us earlier this year? Well last week I asked Greig to marry me, and he said yes! Can’t thank you enough for everything! Shaun. #FirstDates”

On waiter from the show, Austin Ventour, replied to the tweet alongside maitre d Fred Sirieix, with hand clapping emoji.

Another waiter, CiCi Coleman, responded: “YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! congratulations!!!! Sooooo happy to hear this.”

The path to the two men meeting happened after Fairweather had previously already appeared on the show.

He appeared on an episode which aired on 6 June along with John, a pub landlord and rugby player.

Before the main course arrived on the date, John told Fairweather: “It sounds really bad, but I don’t find you attractive. You’re a really genuine guy. We seem to get on, but I just don’t have that connection with you. What’s the point in staying?”

Fairweather asked John: “Do you want to cancel the main course?”, and ended up leaving John to eat on his own.

Congrats!

Channel 4 back in October defended airing a scene in First Dates in which a man joked about going on a date with a “tranny”.

In the scene, broadcast last week and which remains online, a man claims that he was “catfished by a tranny” before laughing about her having a ‘bigger penis’ than him.

His date then pretends to reveal that she is transgender as a joke.

And last year, transgender former boxing manager Kellie Maloney had her appearance on a celebrity episode of First Dates axed, because the man she was matched with was “uncomfortable” that she is trans.
