Danica Roem has gone viral after destroying Republicans for their transphobia

Danica Roem, the first transgender person elected to a state legislature in Virginia, has finally hit back at Republicans who ran a hateful campaign against her.

Earlier this month, the journalist and heavy metal vocalist triumphed over Bob Marshall, a 26-year incumbent who proposed legislation that would have restricted which bathrooms trans people could use.

He also refused to debate Roem or refer to her as a woman during the campaign, calling her “him” on campaign flyers.

Danica Roem, a Democrat for Delegate in Virginia's district 13, and who is transgender, sits in her campaign office on September 22, 2017, in Manassas, Virginia. "Look at the inside of my shoe, ok?" replies Danica Roem when asked how many voters she has already approached in her bid to win a Virginia statehouse seat. The Democratic candidate has no time for subtleties as she races to become the first openly transgender person elected to office in this Republican US state. In a move which some would say labels them as sore losers, Republicans also abruptly took the decision last week to stop using gendered language in the House of Delegates – so they won’t have to refer to Roem as a woman.

After this step, which signalled that lawmakers are set on continuing to target Roem for her gender identity, she fired back a guided missile of a tweetstorm.

“Since the election, I’ve repeatedly heard these Republican talking points about why they lost, basically making Democratic voters out to be too dumb to vote Republican and caring too much about identity politics.

“At risk of giving them good ideas, let me break this down,” she began majestically.

The delegate-elect, who was joined by newly elected LGBT representatives all over the country earlier this month, explained how she campaigned on policy – unlike her opposition.

“I spent 10 months detailing my plan to fix Route 28 … Y’all hit me on “transgenderism.”

She said that in Virginia, Republicans had “campaigned throughout the state on Confederate statues and fiscally reckless tax cuts your own state senators called BS.

“And you wonder why you lost?”

Continuing her barrage of truth and insight, she recalled how she and her fellow candidates “talked relentlessly about jobs. Roads. Schools. Health care. Equality.”

In contrast, she said, “y’all went after us for ‘teaching transgenderism to kindergartners’ and ‘socialism.’

And in a fiery tweet, she summed up why running on a platform of hate is self-defeating.

“When you spend an entire year just trying to make people afraid of people in their community and you apply this asinine labels as if you’re trying to make people afraid of an ideology or an idea, then you’re neglecting the very basics of governing to divide our communities,” she wrote.

“Look at the BS the Democrats … had to put up with from y’all this year.

“Racism. Xenophobia. Transphobia.

“When I went on offence in my TV ad, I had a first-person testimonial from someone … who your policies left uninsured.

“You hit me for my band and my gender.”

At this point, she had dropped the mic so many times that it might actually be broken.

In one last knockout punch, she wrote: “Knock off the divisive BS and actually campaign on boring stuff like infrastructure, because it’s the boring stuff that the people pay you with their tax dollars to work on so they don’t have to focus on it.

“That’s literally your job. Try doing it.”

And finally, she told Republicans all over the state that “y’all actually, sincerely thought based on a POS robo poll that 27% of Dems wouldn’t vote for me if they knew I’m trans.

“1) Wrong.

“2) Stop attacking trans people.”

Roem takes office in January.

We can’t wait.
