A tweet about gay culture with a heartbreaking twist has gone viral for the best reason.

The tweet, which was only written yesterday but has since been retweeted nearly 30,000 times was written by a man from the US.

“Gay culture is being a teenager when you’re 30 because your teenage years were not yours to live,” he wrote.

The tweet struck a chord with other Twitter users.

Many felt that they had lost years from their lives because they felt inclined to hide their sexuality.

The tweet sparked a conversation online about the effect staying closeted had on people.

However, they kept the discussion positive as calculated their REAL ages (minus the years that they were closeted)

One person wrote: “Second puberty at 50 was one of the more interesting rides I’ve been through.”

“I went from being out at 20 to being in an unhealthy five-year relationship. I’m probably 17,” the original tweeter wrote.

“So at 40 this makes me 21 again? Oh what a wondrous moment to be alive,” another added.

Others explained that they hadn’t thought of the effects of being closeted this way until seeing the tweet.

One explained: “This is both fun & a little heartbreaking. ‘I’m fun now because I was robbed of my adolescence’.”

“So that’s why I’m like this! I thought I was just regressing,” someone else said.

A third wrote: ” almost cried when I read this. I didn’t realize how much I needed someone who was not me to say it out loud.”
