Watch: Gay cyclist gets round of applause for shutting down homophobic street preacher

A gay cyclist got a huge round of applause in Glasgow – after he came face-to-face with an anti-LGBT street preacher.

The Christian preacher had taken up a spot outside a comic book shop in Glasgow city centre on Saturday afternoon.

The preacher could be seen shouting loudly about the ‘immorality’ of sexual sins.

He was mostly ignored by shoppers… except for one brave cyclist.

The passing cyclist overheard what was being said, and he couldn’t help but get involved.

Writer Emlyn Pearce shared a video of the incident on Facebook – showing the brave cyclist stopping his bike after the preacher decided to claim gay people are going to hell.

The cyclist said: “I’m gay! I’m gay, so say it to me.”

When the preacher suggested the man needs to repent and find God’s love, the cyclist immediatelyshot back.

“I love me, I don’t need a god to do it,” she told the preacher.

Nearby shoppers broke into applause at the comeback, as the man sped off on his bicycle.

Sharing the clip on Facebook, Pearce said a lot of people had been inspired by the cyclist’s actions.

If anyone knows this chap, please tell him to get in touch because a fair few people would like to buy him a drink.”

Street preachers in the UK can face public order action for overt hate speech but is rare for a conviction to be upheld.

Hate preaching is not legal in the UK

Last year, an English judge quashed a conviction against a separate preacher, Michael Overd, for an anti-gay street sermon.

The former soldier was initially convicted of a public order offence for his homophobic street sermons.

But the decision was overturned by a Taunton Crown Court judge, who found that the preacher had a right to free speech.

Some people’s comebacks to hate preachers can prove even more satisfying than having them taken away.
