Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills to be investigated by Ofcom
BBC Radio One DJ Scott Mills is being investigated over on-air comments.
Ofcom, the broadcasting watchdog, has confirmed he faces investigation after making comments about people from Essex during a 24-hour radio show.
The veteran Radio 1 presenter faces the probe after jokes were broadcast by Mills and fellow presenter Chris Stark during a 24 hour marathon show to raise money for Comic Relief.
Jokes included “What’s the first thing an Essex girl does in the morning? Goes home.”
“Why does an Essex girl wear knickers? To keep her ankles warm”, and “What does an Essex girl say after her doctor tells her she is pregnant? Is it mine?”.
Furious listeners have labeled the ‘jokes’ as “derogatory” and “sexist”.
An Ofcom spokesperson said: “We’re investigating whether this programme breached our rules on generally accepted standards.”
Now Bobby Norris, star of The Only Way Is Essex, has defended the gags.
Norris had been on the show suggesting the one-liners, claiming it was fine as he’s from Essex.
Mills had told listeners: “I’d like to point out, before anyone complains, this is a person from Essex, living in Essex on a show (The Only Way Is Essex) about Essex.”
He added: “I’m enjoying this so much.”
The DJ previously appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, defending the show’s refusal to have gay dance couples.
