There’s a new international entry in the competition for this year’s most heartwarming Christmas ad.

The advert for Danish electronics retailer Elgiganten Denmark, titled ‘Let the Gifts Talk’, features a young transgender woman at home with her parents for Christmas.

She appears nervous as they sit in silence, when her father passes her a present.

Slowly unwrapping the gift, she discovers her dad has bought her hair straighteners – a clear gesture of acceptance.

The company explained: “The most important thing with a Christmas gift is that it really means something to the recipient.

“Our Christmas campaign is called ‘Let the gifts talk’, precisely because gifts can actually say so much.

“They can say small things, but also big, important, beautiful and inspiring things.”

The ad got its debut on Danish TV last week.

One viewer said: “I just saw this on TV. First time I’ve ever seen anything about transgenderness in a Danish commercial during prime time.

I was so happy I had to go find it on YouTube, just to watch it again. I’m this close to crying tears of joy.

“Tears of joy over a freaking electronics commercial, but nevertheless, tears of joy. Thank you, Elgiganten.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
