The teen who cannot be named for legal reasons does not live with her mother and does not contact her. She sought the help of government agencies to begin the process.

On Wednesday, Anmarie Calgaro claimed in court that her parental rights had been infringed and as well as suing her daughter was also suing the county health board, school district, and two local health care non-profit organisations.

In a statement to reporters, she said: “It was brought to my knowledge that my son [sic] began receiving hormone replacement treatments from Park Nicollet Health Services to transition from male to female, with medical assistance paying for this.

“I was not consulted or informed about this in any way.”

Even though Minnesota law states “any minor who is living separate and apart from parents and who is managing personal financial affairs may give effective consent to personal medical and other health services, and the consent of no other person is required,” Ms Calgaro still believed parents should be notified and included in their children’s medical decisions.

Ms Calgaro’s solicitor Erick Kaardal claimed Ms Calgaro’s 14th Amendment rights had been violated as a result of the action.

She is also being represented by the Thomas More Society, an anti-abortion law firm who are currently representing a Texan activist who attempted to frame Planned Parenthood by buying and selling organs.

This week, a judge ruled that Minnesota must provide gender reassignment on Medicaid.

Judge William Leary said to deny access under the program was unconstitutional.
