A thug who brutally murdered a gay man has been jailed for 17 years.

Christo Oncke was found guilty of killing Dawid Olyne in Cape Town, South Africa.

Mr Olyne was brutally killed in March 2014, when he was beaten and strangled, tied up, and set on fire by Oncke.

News24 reports that after he had attacked Mt Olyne, Oncke left and and attended a karaoke night.

The thug, who claimed he got angry when Mr Olyne “came onto him”, was found guilty of a murder hate crime charge.

Seventeen witnesses in the case testified that Oncke bragged that he was going to kill a “moffie”, a derogatory term for a gay man.

Oncke, who had six previous convictions, was jailed for 17 years today.

Judge Siraj Desai said previously: “By his own words he had assaulted [Olyne]. He said he was sexually attacked by Olyne and that caused him to react the way he did. He meant to hurt him and this points to it being a hate crime.”

Members of the Triangle Project, an anti-homophobia charity, said they were happy that the judge had use the term “crime of hate”, but that they thought Oncke may have had accomplices who have escaped justice.

Sharon Cox from the project, said: “It is unfortunate the other people who killed Dawid are free and Oncke has been left to take it all upon himself.”
