Trump ally: It’s better to disband the military than allow trans troops

Tony Perkins, an evangelical ally of Donald Trump, has claimed that it would be better to “disband” the military than to allow trans people to serve.

The anti-LGBT Family Research Council head has close links with the Republican billionaire Presidential hopeful.

Earlier this year, when Trump was mocked for misquoting the Bible in a speech, he revealed it had been co-written by Mr Perkins. Trump, who has also rallied with Perkins on a number of occasions, later made a $100,000 ‘donation’ to his church for flood relief.

Trump last week appeared with Perkins at an event where the Presidential hopeful slammed reforms that allow transgender people to serve openly in the military.

Following that appearance, Perkins has this week gone even further by suggesting it would be better for the military to disband.

Speaking on his radio show, he said: “So we see the administration pushing forward without congressional input on integrating transgenders [sic] into our nation’s military.

“What else can this administration do to the military other than just disband it?”

Right Wing Watch reports he later corrected himself by saying: “I probably need to take it back when I said that the only thing worse the president could do would be to disband the military.

“Actually, that might even be better. We’re probably better off without a military that is not compromised, because we think we have a military that’s defending our country and able to do that but we have a military that in many ways is a hollowed-out shell.”
