Drag queen could run to become President of Ireland

Drag queen Panti Bliss is seriously considering running to become President of Ireland.

In 2014, a heartwarming speech given by the drag artist about the oppression that gay people face went viral, and was even sampled as part of a Pet Shop Boys track.

Panti Bliss, real name Rory O’Neill, has since become a household name in Ireland, speaking out for LGBT equality.

The drag star became the unlikely face of the Yes campaign in Ireland’s same-sex marriage referendum last year, helping bring about a landslide victory.

In an interview with Irish Central, Bliss revealed there was “serious talk” of a run for President.

The drag artist teased: “I jokingly have said I would be quite good with the Irish presidency because I make a decent speech and Panti poses pretty well for pictures

“I suppose you would get two people for the price of one.

“My life is an open book. All of the worst things I’ve ever done are all out there. There are no skeletons left in my closet.

“People mention a presidential run half jokingly to me… and yet there was a time when our political parties were coming to me but I had no interest.”

Ireland’s current President, Michael D Higgins, finishes his current term in 2018.

However, up against Panti, we’re not sure he’d stand much of a chance.
