A Democratic candidate has released an election ad featuring drag queens singing Katy Perry’s Firework.

Scott Wiener currently serves on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in the seat once held by gay rights icon Harvey Milk, and is making a bid in November for a seat in the California Senate.

The openly gay politician – who has also tackled stigma by speaking about his own use of HIV-preventing PrEP drugs – released an off-the-walls election ad this week ahead of the vote.

The ad features three local California drag queens,Carnie Asada, Au Jus, and Miz Palou, singing a parody of Firework,

They sing: “Do you know who works hard for me and you? He’s small and smart and true. Scott Wiener’s the one who fights, our champion, working day and night, for what he knows is right.

“Scott’s the one who’ll do the work, he’s always shown us what he’s worth. Scott for Senate, oh oh oh, our voice in Sacramento-oh-oh.”

You can’t really argue with that.

Mr Wiener’s campaign explained: “Hope you enjoy this fun video we made to highlight the work Scott Wiener is doing to create a more affordable and livable community.

“We want to thank the amazing queens – Carnie Asada, Au Jus, and Miz Palou – who starred in and helped communicate Scott’s message, with a beat you can dance to!”

Mr Wiener wrote previously: “As a gay man and 19-year resident of the Castro, Pride is intensely personal for me, particularly as the person with the deep honor of occupying the seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors once held by Harvey Milk.

“There will never, ever be another Harvey, and we must remember what he stood for as we move forward as a community. Our community is under intense pressure on various fronts, whether violence, evictions and displacement, homelessness, or lack of access to healthcare. We have our work cut out for us.”

He added: “Today, more than ever, I am immensely proud to be a gay man.

“Together, we have fought and survived the worst days of the HIV epidemic. We have come out of the shadows and claimed a seat at the table, winning elected offices around the country and even a United States Senate seat.

“We no longer have to rely exclusively on allies to push our agenda for us. We now have the capacity to put our own community members in positions of power to get the job done.

“We have demonstrated our immense capacity for love and achieved marriage equality.

“Make no mistake, we face very real challenges ahead, but we are resilient and we get stronger with every setback. We will win in the end, whatever the challenge.”
