The current legislation means the loving couple cannot be legally married.

Since Gogglebox began in Australia, same-sex couple Wayne and Tom have proven a major hit with viewers.

The popular Melbourne-based couple have been together for over fifteen years and raised three children together.

However, as same-sex marriage is yet to be made legal in the country, they are still unable to tie the knot.

Gogglebox viewers were given an insight into the heartbreak felt by the couple as they sat through an episode of Married at First Sight, in which a gay couple gout hitched.

Wayne grew visibly emotional, as he reflected on his and Tom’s current marital situation.

“Are you getting romantic?” asked Tom, to which Wayne replied, “No, it’s making me sad.”

“Why are you getting sad darling?” Tom enquired.

“It’s mum’s birthday on Saturday,” Wayne explains “and it’s the one thing she wanted, was to see us married, and we’re never going to get to do it.”

“We can one day,” Tom reassured his partner.

After the show, viewers expressed outrage online, especially as the marriage the couple were watching quickly ended in divorce.

Explaining why they decided to take part in the show, Tom previously said that he wants to help Australia see same-sex couples as “normal”.

“For us it’s really about being there and being visible getting people to understand us as a normal couple,” he said.

“Are you listening, Mr Turnbull? Australia is. Are you?”

The Australian Prime Minister recently said he is sticking by his plan to introduce same-sex marriage via a public vote, and has called on opposition Senators to help ensure it becomes a reality.

But the proposal is being blocked by opposition parties, who support equal marriage but see a plebiscite see it as costly measure inviting homophobic debate.
