Out trans DJ Stephanie Hirst set to take to BBC Radio 2
Radio 2 could get its first out trans DJ as Stephanie Hirst goes into talks with the BBC.
Hirst, 40, would take over from Paul Gambaccini, who according to the Sunday Mirror, gave his “seal of approval”.
The trans radio DJ would take over after Mr Gambaccini moves slots.
A source told the Mirror: “Stephanie has had four meetings with senior bosses, including three full auditions, which saw her record her radio show as though it is live and going out on air.
“She really impressed and is now very much in the frame for the job.”
Hirst previously presented on Capital FM and on Radio 5Live.
The popular Yorkshire radio presenter, who previously hosted the ‘Hirsty’s Daily Dose’ breakfast show on Capital FM Yorkshire, came out as trans in October 2014, quitting her show.
After it was alleged that Ms Hirst was suspended from Global Radio when she announced her plans to come out, she received a huge outpouring of support from her local and national fans – who spearheaded a campaign to get her back on the airwaves.
Returning to the airwaves on BBC Manchester, she said: “My love of radio has been well documented and I always said I would return, but I wanted to ensure that my return is gentle and allows me time to grow into a broadcaster as Stephanie.
“BBC Radio Manchester has offered me the chance to do just this and ease myself in with a wonderful production team and the support of the corporation as a whole.
“I’m excited and looking forward to getting back behind the mic, playing my favourite 90’s records and talking to callers each Saturday night across Manchester.”
