Tonga’s out gay Olympian hints at which sports have the most queer athletes on Grindr at Rio

Tonga’s out gay Olympian Amini Fonua has opened up about the sports which have the most queer athletes on Grindr at Rio 2016.

Asked by LGBT Olympic Analyst, Charley Walters in a video interview to reveal the sports with the most gay or bi athletes on Grindr, he says: “Rugby.”

Going on to say: “There are a couple of rugby payers, judo, water polo. I mean – sexy men – handsome men.”

He adds: “Im so proud to be gay,: saying he is proud of the community which has been accepting of him.

Of whether it is a “distraction” from his sport to be out as gay, Fonua says: “For me it would be more difficult for me to do what I do if I wasn’t out.”

London was great, I mean you hear the stories about Grindr crashing and all the people coming, but it wasn’t that gay in London. So just to see that it’s growing it’s getting bigger and there’s more visibility – I think role models are really important for kids.”

Of his own childhood, Founa says he had a page bookmarked of a list of LGBT athletes, LGBT actors, and prominent LGBT people, saying “I was always looking for a role model”.

The Olympian adds that it is “Showing that we are taking steps in the right direction.”

Of the situation in Tonga, Fonua says simply it’s “not good, not good”.

“We are a very Christian country but we can hold onto that without being intolerant. It’s possible,” he adds.

An Italian open water swimming star earlier this week become the first Italian Olympic athlete at the Rio 2016 games to publicly come out as gay with an inspirational message about acceptance.

A record number of out LGBT Olympians took to Rio this year to participate in the games, but none were from Team Italy.

Tom Bosworth – a race walker for Team GB – tweeted a photo of himself proposing to his boyfriend on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro earlier this week.

Bosworth and his boyfriend were the second gay couple to engaged at this year’s games, after a rugby sevens player was proposed to by her girlfriend.

At the weekend, a Brazilian judo champion came out publicly as gay in an interview during the Rio Olympics.
