Nancy Pelosi: Hillary Clinton struggles to win over white men because of ‘gays, guns and God’

US House minority leader Nancy Pelosi has said “guns, gays and God” are holding back Hillary Clinton from winning over white men.

The Democrat made the comments about Mrs Clinton’s campaign and the 2016 presidential election.

When asked by journalist Judy Woodruff why Republican nominee Donald Trump does better in the polls than Mrs Clinton, the California Democrat had a simple explanation.

She said: “So many times, white — non-college-educated — white males have voted Republican. They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three G’s — God being the woman’s right to choose.”

The lawmaker added: “We’re about rejecting trickle-down economics, instead an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few… In terms of winning the election, it’s all about turnout and how we connect with the voter as to what it means in their lives to turn out to vote, to win the House, the Senate, statehouses, state governorships and the rest. So, turnout is everything.”

Democratic Presidential candidate Mrs Clinton at the weekend named Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate.

Senator Kaine has been a long-time advocate for LGBT+ equality. He was one of the original sponsors of the Equality Act, and in 2006 on becoming the Governor of Virginia he signed an executive order to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Hillary Clinton was pictured last Friday visiting the site of the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, laying a wreath of flowers, and vowing to make changes to protect the LGBT+ community.

On Thursday night, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed he’ll do “everything in his power” to protect LGBT people – despite his actively anti-LGBT stances.

The reality TV star-turned-Presidential hopeful made the comments in his acceptance speech after officially becoming the Republican candidate for President.

In the speech he claimed to be a champion of the LGBT community in the wake of the Orlando massacre – after previously suggesting a Clinton victory would lead to the mass murder of gays.
